Casting Updates For Zane’s ‘Addicted’ & Tyler Perry’s ‘Single Mom’s Club’ (Sharon Leal, William Levy)

Casting Updates For Zane's 'Addicted' & Tyler Perry's 'Single Mom's Club' (Sharon Leal, William Levy)

Tambay reported earlier today that Boris Kodjoe has been cast in Lionsgate's big screen adaptation of erotic fiction writer Zane's popular novel Addicted, which follows the trials and tribulations of a successful sex-addicted African American businesswoman.

We can now also add Sharon Leal and William Levy to the cast.

We'd previously reported that Nia Long and Tasha Smith were also in talks to lead the cast, as the sex-addicted woman and and her therapist respectively. Whether they still are hasn't been confirmed.

It looks like Leal may actually be taking the lead role in place of Long, and Smith is onboard as the therapist.

Here's the proper synopsis:

For Zoe Reynard, finding the pleasure she wants, the way she wants it, is not worth the risk of losing everything she has: marriage to the man she has loved since childhood, a thriving company, three wonderful children. But Zoe feels helpless in the grip of an overpowering addiction…to sex. Finding a compassionate woman therapist to help her, Zoe finally summons the courage to tell her torrid story, a tale of guilt and desire as shocking as it is compelling. From the sensitive artist with whom she spends stolen hours on rumpled sheets to the rough and violent man who draws her toward destruction, Zoe is a woman desperately searching for fulfillment — and something darker, deeper, and perhaps deadly. As her life spins out of control and her sexual escapades carry her toward a dangerous choice, Zoe is racing against time to uncover the source of her "fatal attraction" — as chilling secrets tumble forth from the recesses of a woman's mind, and perilous temptations lead toward a climax that can threaten her sanity, her marriage… and her life.

The novel is described as a psychological drama; and Lionsgate initially tapped Rosemary Rodriguez (primarily a director of TV shows like L&O:SVU and The Good Wife) to directAddicted, from a script adaptation initially done by Christina Welsh, with a rewrite by playwright Lucy Thurber.

However, Rodriguez was replaced by Bille Woodruff, who is set to direct the film, as wd reported over the summer.

Meanwhile, on top of Addicted, Levy has also been cast in a lead role in Tyler Perry's dramedy, Single Mom's Club, which Lionsgate will distribute.

Perry will write, direct, produce and star as well in Single Mom's Club, which centers on a group of single mothers from varying backgrounds, who are brought together via an incident at the school their children attend, leading to the creation of a support group that helps all of them overcome personal obstacles.

No word on other casting.

You will remember when, in a July interview, the Dancing With The Stars alum revealed that he'd been cast in a Tyler Perry movie that was to shoot this fall, but he wouldn't say what the project was exactly.

This must obviously be it.

It's also worth noting that both of these are Lionsgate projects.

I actually think sharon is gonna nail this role, she's super underrated. I think this is gonna be big for her. She's very talented, pretty…one of only a few actresses who can play different roles and seem like A different person everytime. Everyone is saying the role should've went someone else like Kerry. I love Kerry as much as sharon but do u people ever stop to think she's not that popular because Kerry,Meagan, lathan, union, Henson…. Are getting all the roles. This is great for her. I don't think they would've cast her if they thought she couldn't act. SHARON ROCKS!!!!!!

You've got to be out of your mind if you think Sharon Leal can't act. This whole "bigger star" bs has absolutely nothing to do with chops. Sharon's gonna kill this role, just watch. Haters bring it on because you'll be eating your words. Popularity doesn't trump raw talent. I'm excited to see Sharon and I am banking on more roles for her to show you just what she has to offer. Why everyone wants to see the same women in every film is a mystery to me. Rock on Sharon Leal I love you!

"Dramedy" is a perfect descriptive. I never know whether to laugh or cry.

"was hoping this was taken a little more seriously" SERIOUSLY? Surely you jest. I mean, to suggest such is like ordering Ramen Noodles and being surprised when there's no meat. We're talking Zane not Shakespeare. We're talking "Addicted", not Romeo & Juliet. This is about "Sex addiction" but we're talking Zane's Addicted not Steve McQueen's Shame. We're talking the rap video director Bille Woodruff, not Steve McQueen, the director of the brilliant film Hunger. We're talking the unknown playwrights Christina Welsh, and Lucy Thurber, not the Oscar winning playwrights from "The Descendants" Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash. We're talking "trash" not serious cinema. "You're not gonna get your Kerrys, Thandies, Anikas, Sanaas, or Zoes for something like this". You're going to get the Boris Karloffs and Sharon Osbournes of the world. The black versions, that is, of the dead and the obscure.

Sharon Leal and Boris Kudjoe as the leads – now this is losing me. Not the strongest actors, was hoping this was taken a little more seriously. I keep thinking of Diane Lane in CHLOE or UNFAITHFUL. That's the kind of actress (Black version lol) who would be great for this.

When I saw the name "William Levy" I was thinking Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World (William Daniels), not the non-acting pretty boy from Single Ladies and the M&M commercial. It wouldn't have made any sense, but it would have been interesting!

Sigh...

Please make this clear to everyone that this is not a Tyler Perry project. Believe it or not, not EVERY black project at Lionsgate is produced by Tyler Perry. He would never do anything this edgy, and Zane's audience is strong enough to not have to be piggy-backed with Tyler Perry.

Orville – Sharon is an amazing talent and criminally underrated. Good for her as I'm confident she'll nail this role.

Psychological drama are not words I would associate with Zane's work. Bad porn is a more accurate description. As far as the casting is concerned, maybe more well known actresses don't want to be associated with bad porn.

How is Sharon Leal going to sell this movie to an audience she's an unknown actress? This is going to theatres and I am not sure she is big enough to sell this film. I don't understand why the studio would pick an unknown and an older woman to be the lead? This project needed higher profile black actresses and also they needed to go younger. This movie would be perfect for Kerry Washington she's a cross over actress she's younger than Sharon Leal and she's a better actress, more well known and a star. Kerry Washington should be considered she's so close to making it big in Hollywood with Scandal and Django Unchained. Kerry Washington is the perfect choice.

As for Tasha Smith and Nia Long, they are too old for this film it needs to go younger. I can see Meagan Good she has sensuality, she's hot, she's a good actress to she should be considered for the lead role too. Paula Patton, Rosario Dawson would also be good choices too they have the youth and sex appeal and the sensuality to crossover.

If this movie wants to make money hire the younger and hotter black actresses they can crossover and reach a wider audience.
