Ordinarily, the presence of Kate Hudson would have us throwing red flags all over the place. Good lord, remember this? However, the new project she has brewing has two counterpoints: Ewan McGregor and Peter Capaldi.
The actor and writer/director will be joining her in "Born To Be King" which will hopefully offer a bit of edge to what sounds like a standard movie-world lark. Penned by Capaldi — who is perhaps best known for his role on Armando Ianucci's "The Thick Of It" — the story will center on an extra (McGregor) who bears a striking resemblance to a movie star, who crosses paths with a starlet (Hudson), in a fued with her co-star. Sparks will fly! Hollywood will be ribbed! But will the material work?
We'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now. This writer (un)ashamedly liked "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" which is about as Mom Movie as you can get, mostly due to the charm of its leads, and if McGregor and Hudson can gel well here, who knows. And Capaldi hopefully has a bit of firepower beneath a premise we've kinda seen before. Production begins in January. [Variety]
