IMDb Users List Top 10 Horror Movies of All Time, From ‘The Shining’ to ‘Sweeney Todd’

IMDb Users List Top 10 Horror Movies of All Time, From 'The Shining' to 'Sweeney Todd'

IMDb has released its user-rated Top 10 Horror Movies of All Time just in time for Halloween, and at the height of Hitchcock and Kubrick renaissances — "The Shining" is in the top spot and "Psycho" is not far behind in fourth.

Jack Torrence and Norman Bates aside, for true and even moderate horror enthusiasts this list will seem bogus. "Zombieland" ranks above "The Exorcist"? No classic Universal monsters? No Hammer? Are "Zombieland" and "28 Days Later" really the best representatives for the entire undead genre?

Tell us, what are your top horror films of all time?

IMDb's list, and trailers for 1-5 below:

1. "The Shining" (1980, dir. Stanley Kubrick)

2. "Alien" (1979, dir. Ridley Scott)

3. "Shaun of the Dead" (2004, dir. Edgar Wright)

4. "Psycho" (1960, dir. Alfred Hitchcock)

5. "Cloverfield" (2008, dir. Matt Reeves)

6. "Zombieland" (2009, dir. Ruben Fleischer)

7. "Saw" (2004, dir. James Wan)

8. "The Exorcist" (1973, dir. William Friedkin)

9. "28 Days Later" (2002, dir. Danny Boyle)

10. "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (2007, dir. Tim Burton)

So many of the films are from the last decade. And it struck me that some are comedy/parodies. I concur that the absence of John Carpenter is shocking. But what about the father of all zombie films, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead or its sequel Dawn of the Dead? Or the Robert Wise The Haunting, which terrified me as a child? Or the classic Dracula, Mummy and Frankenstein films? Or The Creature from the Black Lagoon? (I grew up watching Chiller Theater every Saturday night.) Or The Omen, which has the scariest score ever? A classical station was playing it this weekend and it raised the hairs on my neck. I love Sweeney Todd, but I prefer another Tim Burton Johnny Depp classic, Sleepy Hollow.

And where the hell is "The Thing" !!! This list is ridiculous !!! Can you imagine a top 10 list of horror movies without Aliens, The Fly,Halloween and especially without The Thing !! i bet you can't :)

Some of these I absolutely agree with (28 Days Later is excellent in my opinion, there's something frighteningly realistic about it), but my picks would definitely include 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' and 'The Omen'.

Also, 'Shaun of the Dead'? I loved it, but it's a comedy take on horror, so it wouldn't be on my list.
