Janis Joplin Biopic Starring Amy Adams Back On, Lee Daniels To Direct

Janis Joplin Biopic Starring Amy Adams Back On, Lee Daniels To Direct

The year was 2010, and at the time Amy Adams was attached to play famed rocker Janis Joplin with "City Of God" helmer Fernando Meirelles to helm. Or that was at least the plan. And then there was nothing heard again about a biopic until earlier this year when "Martha Marcy May Marlene" helmer Sean Durkin signed up for "Joplin" with Nina Arianda in the lead role. And now, there is some fierce competition from Adams, as her movie is back moving, not only eyeing a similar start date but bringing a name director along with it.

"Precious" and "The Paperboy" helmer Lee Daniels is in talks to direct "Get It While You Can." Ron and Theresa Kounin-Terry penned the screenplay for the movie that is currently being financed independently, though arthouse power players Focus Features are eyeing getting involved. And even more, should everything come through, production would get under way in early 2013, the same timeframe "Joplin" is looking to start lensing.

However, both directors are currently busy. Daniels is in post-production on his ensemble historical piece "The Butler" for The Weinstein Company while Durkin is just getting started on production on his Brit TV series "Southcliffe." However, what may mark a key difference between the two movies is that Durkin's has the rights to the songs by Janis Joplin and Big Brother And The Holding Company. And we presume this means 'Get It' doesn't (or maybe has limited access).

Of course, this isn't the first biopic showdown, with duel Jeff Buckley flicks at one point going head-to-head until the Penn Badgley starring "Greetings From Tim Buckley" (ironically, the one that didn't have rights to the songs) got out of the gate first and premiered at TIFF, while the "official" movie starts over with a new director.

But who do you see playing Joplin? Is Adams too big of a name? Who will do her rough and tumble life better justice, Durkin or Daniels? We'll soon see. [THR]

Just my humble opinion. I am a big fan of Amy Adams. However, Janis died a long time ago and anyone under 50 won't have a clue who she is or what this incredibly talented woman contributed to the world of music. This movie could go down in flames if it doesn't offer a bridge beween the generations. I would like to see a real talent in the music world to play this part. Someone with the stage presents and personality to play both the entertainer role and the personal role to help portray and understand Janis. It would be a mistake not to consider Grace Potter.

Funny, the very thing that I dislike most about Amy Adams is her annoying voice. It was good for her Junebug character but it has been not so good for some of her other characters. Maybe she will find her voice playing Joplin. At least Amy has the round face.

What a delicious dilemna. My two favorite actresses, bar none. Amy Adams is now our most talented and versatile actress (who isn't named Meryl Streep), and she will absolutely kill in this role, just as she does in every single character she's ever played. Don't worry about which Janis not being her "type" of character – if you've seen all her films, you know she HAS no type – she really can do it all.
And having seen Nina Arianda this year on Broadway in "Venus in Fur", all I can tell you is Look Out – she's really got IT!
Being old enough to have been a fan of Janis while she lived, for me there's no such thing as too much of a good thing. Plenty of room for these two brilliant, talented women to interpret the life of this gifted and tormented artist – there's so much there to work with. Just hope the media doesn't try to start some sort of a cat fight between them, although that would be kinda hot, now that I …

I love Amy Adams and I'm sure she would sell the crap out of this as she does every role but am I the only person that wants her in something different? I know she was attached to the Steve Martin "Object of Beauty" project and there was a rumor or being in "Dark Places." Plus, she's now tied to the Superman franchise going forward and I expect they hope that will be a trilogy. And, mainstream or not, I want her to be a part of the Superman franchise as Lois Lane going forward. I don't want her to be recast. I guess I just think she's a really talented, funny, beautiful actress and I don't need to see her play another drug addict like she did in On the Road. Am I nutso here?

Adams deserves a better director. Where is Todd Haynes when you need him? Perfect combo, don't you think? Someone call his agent!!

Lola

I'm looking forward to the Sean Durkin one. Lee Daniels, not so much.

I love Amy Adams as much as the next man, uh, person, but Janis Joplin died when she was 27, and Adams is 38. Maybe a younger actress would be better for the part? Wait – does that make me ageist? Am I ageist?

Lee Daniels is a hack. He overdirects like nobody's business.

Worst news of the week. (the Lee Daniels part.)

Chris

So Adams' movie is going to be about Jackie Jormp-Jomp?
