Listen: Adele’s “Skyfall” Returns Bond Theme To Classic Territory

Listen: Adele's "Skyfall" Returns Bond Theme To Classic Territory

Well, that was inevitable. Not even 007 himself could stop Adele‘s “Skyfall” from leaking early (it’s officially set for a premiere at 7:07 p.m. EST tonight or 0:07 am in the U.K. — you get the connection, right?) and now that it’s arrived via a rogue French radio station (sacre bleu!), it confirms that it’s as strong as we had hoped.

The last two movies in the Bond series — “Quantum of Solace” and “Casino Royale” — went the alt-rock route with Jack White and Alicia Keys tuning up the former with servicable results, while we’d rather forget the ear poison that was Chris Cornell‘s contribution. But Adele’s tune swings right back into the classic Bond themes of yore, with a big 77-piece orchestra and her beautiful, expressive voice doing all the heavy lifting that’s required. Sure, it’s not breaking any new ground, but it does the familiar very, very, well, though we wonder how it will fit against the standard naked lady silhouette dancing intros that are beginning to get stale. Maybe Sam Mendes will shake that up a bit? Let’s hope.

Anyway, “Skyfall” by Adele will be available to on own on Bond Day (tomorrow), but for now, turn it up and hit play below.

If you want bold gutsy Bond listen to Jaimee Paul sing Skyfall and 12 other Bond songs on her new album to be released Mar 12 entitled Bonded

i can not stand all the negative comments about this song or Adele!!! she is beautiful, this is a beautiful song! how lame are you people that judge her on her body type. is your body perfect? alicia keys can do a song that has basically one line "this girl is on fire" and its ok??? i find it supid and no lyrics. along with rhianna, who just belts out the same old line , time after time in one song and its ok??? she just dances around and aks like a slut. adele is classy, and has REAL TALENT. ALL YOU WHO SAY NEGATIVE THINGS DONT KNOW TALENT WHEN YOU HEAR IT. GO ADELE. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT AND YOUR SINGING IS AWESOME. <3 U

Who are these "pro's" making comments?

I thought it was just me…well I had to find an outlet to express my feelings that Adele is highly over rated. She can not enunciate and the lyrics are, as others have pointed out, kind of juvenile. I agree with someone else's comment that they should have brought in a real pro, not someone who won a game show. As a lifelong Bond fan I almost feel bad talking bad about anything related to the franchise, but I had to say something here. I wish on the last movie they would have cut out Jack White and just let Alicia Keys sing the song as Jack White sucks. Chris Cornell's song at least moves me a little, he at least has some passion coming through.

I usually hate Adele and make no mistake, she certainly loses a note here and there here but that said her singing vs this songs writing… I mean crappy rhyming like skyfall and crum-ball in an epic Bond film? Get out.

I think it's fantastic. Adele's singing is always amazing. Her voice dynamics are awesome. I sang professionally years ago, but didn't have a voice anywhere as good as hers. Way to go Adele!!! You rocked it – once again.

just me

This will MURDER the bond franchise! Is this more affirmative action? It's unadulterated crap! So unbond like! BORING BORING BORING!!!

This is a great background song. The Rap-Crap generation (Hats on sideways and pants hanging down on they're asses, aren't expected to like it.
Or maybe they will, when they "Grow up!

Richard Heyman

I like Adele but the lyrics were somewhat amaturish for such a big budget movie. No even close to previous 007 super hits like Goldfinger.

The lyrics suggest a jazz song or maybe a poem written in an X's yearbook. Adele did a capable job with the lyrics at hand. My score: singer and arrangement, good! Lyrics, awkwardy adolescent.

Adele sounds great as always but the writing is bad. Whatever happened to the sexy, daring, brash, intense, unforgettable Bond themes that floored you immediately and meshed with each film perfectly. Everything after Barry sounds like it was composed by committee to SOUND like John Barry, some generic Hollywood idea of 'cinematic' with no emotional intelligence.

This is an awful, listliss & plodding song devoid of the beauty & melodrama that made the best bond songs so memorable. Although i like Adele`s songs i think as a singer she is grossly overrated. After all her `Someone Like You` is sung with a sustained whiny tone which shows her shocking lack of range and vocal nuance.

Adele is so awful. All of her songs are exactly the same. I wish they'd stop going with artists that are currently popular and go with people who have been around decades (and actually have talent!).

I had to listen to this twice just to make certain I hadn't fallen asleep during the first listening and missed something.

Let's be clear on something: this song absolutely in no way, shape or form returns Bond music to "classic territory," and it's almost insulting to suggest that. Adele's vocals are well-executed, given what she has to work with here. The instrumentation is kitschy and overdone, but not (in classic Bond themes), here and there, in an exclamatory fashion in order to exploit the best moments of payoff and drama that come from the music; instead the orchestral swells and choir are – plainly – there to try to beef up and maintain interest in a shockingly repetitive, simplistic, underworked, undisciplined piece of composition. Since one cannot polish a turd, even with an excellent brass section, it fails.

In terms of the sheer lack of art – of creativity in buildup, invention, melody, movement in any discernible direction other than a dull, straight line – I think this is the worst Bond theme yet produced. It's actually embarrassing.

Bond Guy

i will say the music does sound more like the classics but their is one and only one issue with the past few bonds….. how did he go from dark hair dark eyed guys to blonde hair blue eyed? hair cye and color conatcts are cheap maybe if you make a series using a similar character you should research some before picking the next bond.

I love love love Adele…she can sing anything!!! so beautiful!!!

Enjoy listening to Adele's voice- it's beautiful! Do NOT like some of her songs though-including this latest one. I actually turned it off 3/4 through as it was boring.

Adele is totally amazing – I love to listen to her sing. She has a beautiful and sultry voice and we are able to understand each word and appreciate the lyrics. I adore Adele!

Wonderful! Perfect fit for Bond! James Bond!

Great singer, decent song, but I gotta be honest… I'm tired of the ballad-style Bond themes. It's been been done to death already. What am I watching: A spy movie? An action movie? A romance??? I'll take Cornell, A-Ha, and Paul McCartney anyday over Sheena Easton, Sheryl Crow, and Carly Simon. I want something to get my blood pumping and fist raising.. not something that makes my girl say "awww, that's such a sweet song".

Loved it!!!!

LOVE IT!!!!!!

wow, her voice is like trumpets from heaven.

AMAZING!!!It is just like Adele..wonderful and sexy!

My 1 1/2 cents worth: With all the garbage the movie studios (mainstream and Indy) are putting out these days, it's exciting to finally see another Bond take place. True fans of the franchise do not care who sings what and most could give a rats "you know what" who plays the main character…. it's Bond. That's all that matters. As far as opening songs for the films goes, sure, there have been some that were, shall we say, "worthy, not worthy" of being tied anywhere whatsoever to Bond… However, I'll bet 98% of you keep humming "View to a Kill" every couple years or so after you hear it played on your local pop radio station. This one by Adele, coupled with the genius of how Craig plays Bond, and then presented from the view of an excellent director such as Mendes, will make this tune a hit no matter how it's "Shaken, not stirred."

Although this song is more than "meh" it is less than "yesss!". Adele's powerful voice carries the song off well and in typical Bond style, but this song shouldn't win an Oscar or Grammy Award. But Adele, for all her well deserved fame, has joined a very small sorority that will ensure she will be remembered for a very long time by recording a Bond theme. Well done.

Adele is a very good singer, but this song does not flow, and just like Craig as Bond, it SUCKS!!!

Joe Engineer

Song is ok and fit with a typical Bond film. Hopefully that video (without the subtitles) is not the intro. Not that good.

Kevin – you are however are a putz. Cornell's intro the "Casino Royale" is perfect for introducing a new type of Bond. Brash and bloodied at times, but relentless. Like the music.

What type of Bond fan are you? and has your acme cleared up yet.

Do not think you understand how the song theme and Daniel Craig's character, etc. tie together.

Good opening song: sets the right tone for the movie. It sounds big, bluesy, with touch of sadness and a touch of danger. A good movie song supports the movie, and this song does the business.

Typical Bond theme song. Same mood. Same type of lyrics. Nothing special, just a song to set the opening of the movie and its mood. Sounds like many of the other theme songs. They should have let Adele write the song for this movie. It would have been original and still set the mood. And what's with all the rhyming words at the end of each line? Sounds like the stupid rhymes I come up with around my daughter for fun and silliness. Adele obviously did this for the money and I'm sure a very persuasive agent and movie franchise owner were involved. But, that's my opinion. I wasn't impressed with the song, but I'll run out to see the movie anyway, because I love Bond movies.

NO ONE but Adele could do this………………….she's fabulous and makes this worth watching.

Bond is Bond no matter what year it is made there is a special quality to Bond movies and Bond music and no matter who it sounds like I think Adel has captured the Bond feel it sounds great and makes me ook forward to the movie.

Adele's vocal gift and the Bond theme gently layered into the background make this track a win. I'll buy it, and probably the full score as well.

What 12 year old writes these little accompanying "articles" on MSN? "Moonraker" theme was beautiful, music by the incomparable John Barry and vocal by Dame Shirley Bassey. This theme is impressive, I prefer a little more upbeat spirit Bond films and music, but thats just my humble opinion..

Elke Hassell

May be its just me and may be a little old fashion, but does this song not resemble "Diamonds are Forever" by Dame Shirley Bassey, also you just can't beat the Classic Bond Songs from days gone by, Live and let Die, Goldfinger, For your eyes only, but I suppose Adele's rendition of Skyfall fits the typical Bond Theme Music, just like I said it reminded me of Diamonds are Forever!

love it!!

And yeah, not to pile on Kevin, but the "standard naked lady silhouettes" weren't used at all in Casino Royale and were pretty minimal in Quantum of Solace. Have you actually seen one of these recently?

Wow! What a great combination: Arguably the greatest movie franchise and inarguably the greatest vocal talent in the business. A fresh approach yet an homage to the Bond themes of the past. Nice going! Adele, you are awesome!

Oh, and Adele is awesome! I do like the female sung versions of Bond themes over male.

@Kevin Jagernauth: Cornell's Bond theme "Ear Poison?" A bit harsh. Not my favorite Bond theme but hardly ear poison. With some of his Bond theme videos at over 2M views with more than 6k likes and only 93 dislikes…. Maybe you should keep your opinion to yourself. But I suppose that's what an opinion is… afterall you are the "author" of this article.

Adele makes anything sound awesome.

Adele is fabulous, but the schmaltzy production is garbage. Do they they still think it's 1960?

Love it, love it, love it, love it!!!! I love me some Adele!!

OMG! Gotta love Adele! It does bring the classic James Bond music beautifully coordinated with Adele's open sound. Can't wait to see the movie and hear the rest of the soundtrack. Doesn't she pull you to another place than where you are, What a voice!

I love it and can't for the life of me understand why anyone brings up her weight issues. No. 1, the only thing that should count is her TALENT! Who in h— cares how much she weighs? That is the problem with this country, as long as a woman is skinny with big boobs and hot looking, to hell with the talent! Right?

e. mac

'she's fat. so i hate this''re kidding, right? what the heck does weight have to do with talent? i can't believe you can spell.

I don't think this is all bad and I'd have to agree with Frank. Cornell was o.k. and Jack and Alicia were awful.

Where's Goldeneye?! :D

LOL am I the only one who found the french introdution pretty funny??

The next several comments, probably

"Jack White and Alicia Keys tuning up the former with servicable results, while we'd rather forget the ear poison that was Chris Cornell's contribution"

It's funny because the exact opposite is true.

While not terrible and miles better than the last few dreadful Bond themes, I'm not impressed by this Adele tune. Is it just me or is somewhat generic or boring? If I had been in charge I would have used Noel Gallagher's yet to be released song "Freaky Teeth" which UK fans have lobbied for over a year now: Your loss, Bond producers!
