Morgan Freeman Joins Clive Owen To Star In Warrior Revenge Actioner 'The Last Knights'

Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen have signed on to star in Japanese photographer-turned-filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya’s The Last Knights.

Little info is currently available on the project, other than that it centers on “a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor,” says Screen Daily.

It’s not yet public info what roles exactly Freeman and Owen will play in the upcoming movie, although it sounds like a period piece.

However, director Kiriya’s last 2 films – Goemon (based on a Japanese folk legend that echoes the storyof Robin Hood) and Casshern (a live-action sci-fi movie based on the 1973 Japanese animé of the same name) – where what you’d call epic, fantastical, stylized works of art that are heavy on the visual elements. So I suppose we could assume The Last Knights will have similar characteristics.

Kiriya will direct from a screenplay by Michael Konyves.

The producers (Luka Production International) are aiming for an early November production start date in the Czech Republic.

Morgarn Freeman was last seen in this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises, and The Magic of Belle Isle.

Yep, another retelling of the 47 RONIN samurai story. I also wrote a similar tale inspired by the 47 RONIN set in the far future about an African warrior who leads a band of mercenaries on a bloody vendetta to avenge their tribe chieftain. Keanu Reeves is headlining the big-budget Hollywood take on it due out next year I think. So we've got dueling properties based on an ancient samurai tale with mine stuck in spec-script purgatory! I think another rewrite is in order:)
