The National Geographic Channel has had to dramatically increase security at its Washington headquarters in the wake of an influx of threats over its upcoming film “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden.” The threats are reportedly coming from Muslim extremist groups.
NatGeo has already received heat from critics over the release date of the film, set for November 4, two days prior to the presidential election. Those against the timing of the film’s debut argue that it is being staged to boost President Obama’s chances of reelection. (These accusations, which the channel denies, may not be specious: the film’s producer, Harvey Weinstein, is a true-blue Obama supporter.)
A humorous quote comes from a New York Post source on NatGeo’s surprise at the reactions: “They’ve never seen such a dramatic reaction. It’s not like there’s outrage over airing a documentary on the Grand Canyon.”
