Sunday night’s fourth episode of “Homeland” was a spine-tingler. The Emmy-winner is the best series on television right now, and its Emmy-winning stars, Claire Dane and Damian Lewis, deliver on their juicy material every week. Thus it’s no surprise that Showtime has ordered up 12 new episodes for a third season.
As real world news focuses on terrorism in the Middle East, the show could not be more timely–or well-reported. But the setting is just a backdrop for these two flawed, damaged, equally righteous characters, the bipolar CIA analyst vs. the Marine who was turned after eight years in captivity. What will they do next? They are both so volatile that you do not know. In Sunday night’s episode (impeccably directed by Jeremy Podeswa), as Danes proceeds to act on her own initiative for the nth time, her new supervisor (Rupert Friend) turns to Saul (Mandy Patinkin) and asks, “How many times to you have to tell her something?” Saul replies, “A lot.”
