Sony Planning To Kill Off Gwen Stacey In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Trilogy

Sony Planning To Kill Off Gwen Stacey In 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Trilogy

What Emma Stone wants, Emma Stone gets? Back in August, the actress revealed that she was hoping her character of Gwen Stacey in “The Amazing Spider-Man” would stay true to the comics and meet an unfortunate end.  “Essentially the argument is that Spider-Man kills her by accident,” Stone explained about the appeal of the storyline, “So the person she loves is the person who kills her, which is the most horrifying thing. Apparently people unsubscribed to the comic book when that happened because they were just so flipped-out over it. But, of course, I want to stay true to that.” Now, it looks like Sony will.

Buried in THR‘s report yesterday about the “Divergent” casting of Shailene Woodley — who as you recall is now set to play Mary Jane Watson — the trade revealed that the actress’ role is “only a very small part in ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic ‘Death of Gwen Stacy’ story.” Pretty ballsy stuff when you consider the first picture seemed to be a battle between reinvention or delivering the narrative comic fans are familiar with.

In the original comics, Green Goblin (is he coming back as a villain then?) throws Gwen off the Brooklyn Bridge, and Spidey uses his web to catch her. But the whiplash snaps her neck and kills her, leaving Spidey devastated. Enter Mary Jane, who helps Peter Parker grieve and in turn becomes his new flame. Heavy stuff, but an undeniably potent storyline.

Is this the right call? Do you like the direction they’re taking the next two films? Weigh in below.

That was the host horrible decision.

Mako1969

The "Death of Gwen Stacy" story line was 19 year old Gerry Conway trying to make a name for himself. What is truly UNBELIEVABLE is that Marvel let this happen without Stan's knowledge. From an interview with Stan Lee in 1983:

I never would have killed Gwen Stacy in the first place. When I gave up the strip, he (Gerry Conway) said, “How should I write it?” I said, “You’re the writer now, do whatever you want.” I don’t feel it’s right to try to control something if I’m not there anymore. I had to go Europe for a while. When I came back, I found out that she had been killed. I said, “Sheesh! I didn’t mean kill off all of my characters.” But it was done. It was irrevocable.

Conway and Romita of course tried to cover it by saying that they had Stan's approval, but there is NO WAY that this makes any sense. Stan Lee was much smarter than that, having built Spiderman into the greatest comic in the world. Try as they might, ASM was never as good as it was from issues 31-120.

This was the WORST professional decision this director could have made. He basically cut his fan base in half and did not take into account what any of his viewers wanted to see. How many stereotypical comic book movies are going to stick to their original story lines play by play? WE ALREADY SAW THAT IN THE FIRST SPIDERMAN SERIES. What we wanted was a fresh start and all the results that we wanted to see. Now we're stuck back with annoying-as-hell, plain mary-jane. I for one WILL NOT be supporting the next movie especially when they're just going to be refilming the first three spiderman movies. I WANT AN ORIGINAL STORY LINE NOT A COMPLETE REMAKE. The first movie was so refreshing with it's new love interest and the whole promise to gwen's father, but the fact that the director killed off Gwen, my appetite for a new movie is suddenly non-existent. Congrats Marc Webb, you have killed any hope for your new Spiderman Series.

OrCh81

QWERTY you're so right! No one wants to see Emma Stone die. But she is :'(

I really think it would be a great change for Gwen Stacey to survive this movie. I loved her in the first TASM film – yes, I am a hopeless romantic and loved the blossoming romance between Peter and Gwen – and I'm hoping she'll pull through this movie. In my opinion it would be very refreshing for the creators to break away from the cliched theme of Gwen's death and actually give Peter a chance with her, otherwise what was the point in the first movie? Additionally, I will be seething if they re-introduce Mary Jane and make her Peter's love interest in the sequels to TASM 2. Just as Qwerty said, we had MJ in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Give us a break from her and let Gwen take over! Seriously, I will be heartbroken if Gwen dies. I'll probably cry for several hours.

QWERTY

And just emphasis on the fact that Gwen's death was pretty much just an ass-pull. Why can't we just have a series where Spider-Man keeps her? I'm not even joking. I will be genuinely upset at her death.

QWERTY

Gwen's death was initially decided because when making the comic, they didn't know what else to do. Spider-Man would soon get married, and yada-yada. So they killed her off to keep the story going. In this case? No, there's no reason. This isn't the comic book, they don't need to keep the series going for so long that Gwen becomes boring. Also I heard that the original Spider-Man series was going for six movies. SIX. And they weren't about to change the female lead at all. This series? Probably four movies.

Just keep Gwen. We already had Mary Jane in the first series, let us have our Gwen. Besides, it will be boring if they keep the same story. The interesting parts of the first Amazing Spider-Man were the parts they changed. Clearly Gwen is a better female lead.

And also, in the comic Gwen's dad tells Spider-Man to take care of her and she dies. However, in the first movie he says stay away. So why not keep the reversal? Just let her live. No one wants to watch Emma Stone die anyways.

TertiaryPluto

As many have already mentioned it would be better if Gwen doesnt die…In fact many people i know loved the 1rst movie because of Gwen…Also it would be nice to see something different and something that wont make u sad…P.S. I also hate M.J.!!!

Johnny

To be honest. I loved Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey. I first saw her appearance in Superbad and Easy A and I thought she was going to turn Gwen into a total cheesy party girl character but I was wrong. She did amazing. But staying true to the comics is one of the best things to do. Look at Iron Man 3. Yes it is making lots of $$$ but that doesn't change the fact that most of it's reviews turned out to be bad. I saw it, it was bad. Why? Because they didn't stay true to the comics! The Mandarin is one of the best villains in Comic Book history and they completely messed him up. The point is, I'm sure a large amount of the fan base would love to see Gwen's death on the big screen. I know I would. Gwen's death was one of the best moments in comic history. There's nothing better than sticking the original story.

reago

Keeping Gwen Alive will help support the two upcoming films all the way to the end. I would like to see peter get married to her for a change.

nicky

The comic books suck. I'd think about what other people and fans would want instead a bunch of violent comics if I were making this film. If Gwen dies then me and other spider man fans would stop paying attention to it, But if she survives this film and the next one then the spider man series and new stories will continue on happily.

ken

all of you are saps!!!! they have to kill off gwen stacy stay true to the comics if they dont i aint watchin it its just a dam character !!!!!

Steve

Don't kill gwen!!!!!!!

Raph

Also, the amount of people who were saddened by Gwen's death and want her to come back compared to the amount of people that like Mary Jane, Wouldn't it make more sense to kill Mary Jane rather Gwen?

Raph

If they kill Gwen Stacy, Marvel will receive another dramatic fall in Spider-Man fans.
Marc Webb should do a 'Nolan' and bend the storyline into something bigger and better.
I also prefer Gwen than MJ because in a way, Mary Jane took advantage of a grief-stricken Peter and married him. Also, Gwen in both film and comics, is supposed to be considered more attractive than Mary Jane

Jess

nooooo! don't kills gwen stacy!

Alice

I hope all this bridge stuff happen, because of the comic books, but I hope after ALMOST killing her, they find a way to save her and then she doesn't dies and I don't have to stand annoying Mary Jane again :D we all win

I love Emma Stone as an actress, watching her and Andrew is a delight. But, they have to stay true to the Comic. Gwens Death willl be an incredible and emotional scene to watch that I myself am looking forward too, despite how much I don't want her character to die. I don't like the idea that Shailene Woodley is playing Mary Jane though… I just don't think she suits the part very well in my opinion.

andria

i think that they should not kill gwen stacy at all change the comic because the story line is better

JaM

Personally, i don't want Gwen to be killed off that soon.. at least not in next film.. but if they do it, i at least hope for heartbreaking scene that would be memorized by all.. Emma is excellent actress and they have great chemistry with Andrew. I believe those two can make this scene something special and unforgeable especially with Mark Webb as a director..

ANDREW

NOOOOOOO. Do not kill Gwen Stacy! Garfield and Emma have such good chemistry on-screen and even off-screen! Seeing her killed would be a devastation to the reboot trilogy! Although I grew up with Mary Jane, it would be better to see this developed character portrayed by a skilful actress, still in the game!

The Fixer

Problem: Gwen Stacy dies in the comic and she needs to die in order to stay true to the story line.
Solution: Kill off Mary Jane Watson and Let Gwen Stacy live.

That one nerdy girl

I really think they should stay true to the comic. I mean I love Emma Stone and I love Spiderman and Gwen in the first movie, it's adorable, but in order for them to really build on the whole Peter and Mary Jane marriage it must be done. Though I don't think Shailene Woodley should play Mary Jane, noway! They Should have just kept Emma Stone for a later movie becuase she would have made a perfect Mary Jane. :(

me

THEY CAN'T LET GWEN DIE!!!!! i've become so attached to her in the first movie and the thought of her being gone makes me not even want to see the second one! Peter had gone threw so many tragedies all ready so the new movie should just be about him learning about his past, finding himself, and being spider man threw it all. It would be great to see gwen and peter grow together throughout the movie also, THEY HAVE TO KEEP HER IN!!!!

pororo

do not kill gwen stacey! people watch the show beacuse of her if u kill her at least make emma stone as mj as a twist and she meet peter parker somewhere.

simon

They should keep gwen stacey alive because she was a big impact in the film, we have seen to much of mj in the old trilogy and they should try something different this time, there is such a good storyline in the new film and shouldn't ruin it. I personaly think t that they should keep gwen stacey alive in the trilogy

joel

I hate the fact that our opinions will hit deaf ears because
Whatever they're gonna do its already been decided on
But I believe gwen should not be killed Emma's scenes are what
Held the movie together and her character hits all over Mary Jane like if she dies the audience will be too invested in there romance to worry about some red headed skank . Raimi's Spiderman showed mj so let the new one focus on gwen ….most audience members would not have even read that issue of Spiderman that kills off gwen ….the movie would be much more appealing to non readers of the source material ….if I wanted to watch a guy lose his girlfriend and his uncle prematurely by his own actions I'd go watch a drama ….I mean sure dangle gwen in danger for suspence but don't follow through …..mj should just date flash and that's it

Erica

I have become too emotionally invested in Gwen Stacy and Emma Stone so I realllyyyyyy don't want Stacy 2 die. Stacy is smart, active and kinda a shy girl next door. I like how her personality is so real and not just some damsel in distress. Unlike, Mary Jane whose always calling for help and is basically boring. I've never liked Mary Jane and hate Wodley even more , especially since she's a HORRIBLE actress!

Sav

Shailene Woodley as MJ though? Staying true to the comic books is a great idea but they should cast an actress as good as Emma stone so people will actually enjoy watching after they kill Gwen off.

Steve

Actually, Green Goblin threw her off of the George Washington Bridge. Not the Brooklyn Bridge.

D

Well i did hope that they actually let Gwen staying alive cuz she is one of my favorite characters in marvel history. And like many others im not a huge fan of MJ. Even i think it was a really good plot twist let the main charecters girl friend die. this story will always make me cry hard inside. :'(

Siege

Two trilogies. The first ending in Gwen's death, which Peter blames on himself. (They could come up with something totally original in how she dies.) The second would focus on Peter going through all the steps of grieving, and how it affects him as Peter and as Spider-Man. So much potential.

As long as they don't introduce Gwen and Norman Osborn's love children. *gack*

The film people who adapt Marvel properties aren't the only ones that screw things up. Marvel does enough of that one their own. And then try to subtly fix their mistakes with a sledgehammer.

Anyhoo…

Josh

I knew they were going to do the "Death of Gwen Stacy" story a long time ago when they announced that she was his love interest in this movie. I knew that they were going to bring Mary Jane and Green Goblin back in this series. Raimi's Spider-Man was whack. And the "Amazing" series will be leaps and bounds better with their trilogy. Case in point the first one was way better that Raimi's 1st Spider-Man. This new trilogy has potential to create one of the best hero movie or just movie period made if they do the Death of Gwen Stacy story.

Lane

I never liked Mary Jane, I still don't.

HombreGato

When you say "We're doing a Gwen Stacy story", the audience wonders if she'll be killed off, when you say "We're doing the death of Gwen Stacy", the audience loses all opportunity to question her fate, when you say "We're doing the specific take on the death of Gwen Stacy where Spider-Man finds out that the whiplash from his Spider-Web broke her neck" there's no fucking point to even seeing this movie anymore.

Please respect the spoiler warning. This kind of thing is why I stopped reading reviews and websites for many years.

Tom

I was so hoping that they'd kill her off, but it's kind of a let down knowing they're going to do it four or five years before we even see the third movie.

Great Scott!

Do it. That is, if you want me to stay interested in the franchise after this year's unnecessary rehash.

Cde.

Sure, why not? This would be very interesting for a superhero blockbuster. It's called for after the boring safeness of the last film.

M.

Ms. Stone is a small wonder in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and now Sony are planning to kill off her character? How about not only sawing off the branch they're sitting on, but the whole tree the carries it?! And thinking one had to sit through three Spider-man films featuring Ms. Dunst; they could've easily made her "disappear during the first one without my disapproval…

kitcon

No, No, No. Stone and Garfield's time together onscreen were the best parts of the film. The rest was wildly uneven. If Sony kills Gwen Stacy they'll effectively kill a large chunk of the audience's interest. People are already invested in the Stacy-Parker romance. If this were a TV series it could work but for not for a trilogy no matter how good Woodley turns out to be.
