While the horror genre has never been healthier, oddly enough, there are few distinct voices in the genre. But one person who has firmly left his imprint is filmmaker and musician Rob Zombie. Since arriving on the scene in 2003 with “House Of 1000 Corpses,” over the next (near) decade, Zombie has staked out his territory as a director with uncompromising vision, even if the results don’t always work. And his latest is another entry into a filmography that shows no signs holding back or taming things down.
The first teaser trailer has arrived for ‘Lords Of Salem‘ and it’s pretty eerie, effective stuff. Presented almost like a grand opera, this sneak peek doesn’t do much in the way of presenting the premise, but favors strong visuals first and foremost, with some truly hair-raising imagery. Here’s the synopsis: Rock star-turned-horror maven Rob Zombie conjures up a nerve-wracking chiller about a Salem hard-rock radio DJ (Sherri Moon Zombie) whose playing of a sinister heavy metal song awakens a coven of witches from the 17th century.
The film premiered at TIFF to a generally good reception, and our man on the ground declared it Zombie’s best effort yet, saying the film is “driven by a creeping, albeit perhaps over-determined, sense of atmospheric dread.” Damn. Anchor Bay snapped up the rights to the movie after Toronto, and while there is no date on the calendar just yet, it looks like a release is on the horizon. Until then, take a look at what Zombie has put together for you… if you dare… [Deadline]
