Charlize Theron will star in an adaptation of the final chapter of Park Chan-wook's revenge trilogy "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," it was announced Wednesday. William Monahan (the writer behind "The Departed" and "Body of Lies") will direct, and Theron's Denver & Delilah Films has partnered with CJ Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures to produce.
"Lady Vengeance" tells the story of an innocent woman who–for her own reasons–nevertheless completes a prison term, and emerges from incarceration ready to avenge the dead.
“This will be very American – and very unexpected,” the director said. "I've got blood in my teeth to do it."
Monahan won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2007 for his work on Martin Scorsese's "The Departed."
