Charlize Theron Will Star In & Produce 'Lady Vengeance' Remake from Chan-wook's South Korean Revenge Trilogy

Charlize Theron is set to star in and produce “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” through her Denver & Delilah Films banner. CJ Entertainment and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures are also producing. Screenwriter William Monahan (“The Departed,” “The Gambler”) will adapt the script from Park Chan-wook’s final installment of his revenge trilogy.

The story centers on a woman who completes a prison term for a murder she is not guilty of before punishing the true killer and avenging the those slain. Monahan states, “This will be very American – and very unexpected.” He adds that “Park is a genius; it’s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it.”

Chan-wook’s South Korean trilogy began with “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” in 2002, followed by “Oldboy” in 2003 (which has also been remade by Spike Lee for a 2013 release) and “Lady Vengeance” (2005).

Ellison and Annapurna will finance, with Panorama Media handling international sales.
