Jennifer Connelly, Cillian Murphy & Melanie Laurent Will 'Cry/Fly' Together

After breaking onto the international scene with her sophomore feature, “The Milk of Sorrow,” Peruvian director Claudia Llosa will be making her English-language debut with “Cry/Fly,” and she’s landed a trio of talented actors for her first North American-set film.

Jennifer Connelly, who, between this and “Noah,” seems to be coming back into the spotlight, will star as the mother of a girl “who is terminally ill. A dramatic event separates the mother from her sick daughter and falcon-keeper son, and 20 years later, the son is persuaded by a journalist to embark on a search for his now-famous mother.” The supremely underrated Cillian Murphy will play the grown-up version of her son with “Inglourious Basterds” and “Beginners” actress Melanie Laurent landing the journalist role.

The results have generally been uneven when foreign filmmakers dip their toes into English-language filmmaking, but this seems like the perfect thematic fit for Llosa, who has dealt with both disease and how misfortune can spread through a family from parent to child. “Cry/Fly” shoots in February with no release window set. Murphy has done his share of trainwreck, semi-arty, straight-to-DVD nonsense in the last few years, but this one sounds so silly that it almost HAS to be a parody. (Of what, I have no idea.) Please back away from the nonsense script and find yourself another play, Cillian. ("Misterman" was nonstop brilliance.) Or, if not, do have fun filming a load of unreleasable New Age hooey (faith healers and falcon-keepers: really?)… in Manitoba… in February… with an actress who did her best work getting outclassed by David Bowie and a herd of Muppets. Knock yourself out, pal.

I'm exhausted by my love for Cillian the Great – torn between his astonishing acting performances on stage and screen and then finding that hardly anybody knows or cares about them. I can only hope that sooner or later he does a mainstream part that knocks the world at large for six and he has to come on to the radar a bit more so that I can rest easy

The daughter character played by who? What an international combination, thanks for the awesome news. Love Cilian Murphy, like Melanie Larent.
