Independent distribution company Milestone has launched a Kickstarter campaign to aid the Academy Film Archive's costly restoration of filmmaker Shirley Clarke's seminal 1967 documentary "Portrait of Jason," one of the first openly frank LGBT films in existence.
The verité-style film follows a black, gay hustler, and was so progressive for its time that it was quickly shelved into obscurity. The original film elements have been lost for nearly a half-century. Now, as the Academy's restoration team works to bring Clarke's film back to its original glory, Milestone is looking to raise $50K to aid the project.
Milestone is a homegrown company comprised of only two employees, husband-and-wife founders Dennis Doros and Amy Heller. They are seeking the help of film lovers, LGBT activists, historians and anyone interested in protecting this unique cultural document.
