The first two months of the New Year are usually viewed as a dumping ground, but in recent years critical and box office success stories like "Shutter Island" and "Safe House" have shown that it's a quiet frame where genre fare can do tremendously well. That's why we're not worried an iota about Steven Soderbergh's forthcoming "Side Effects," which got the ball rolling a few weeks ago with a pretty fantastic first trailer. And while things are on the down low for the moment, a few more stills from the movie have popped up.
Rooney Mara leads the movie, where she plays a young woman who turns to prescription drugs to deal with her anxiety when the Sexiest Man In The World aka Channing Tatum is released from prison. What happens next is a mindbending nightmare, with writer Scott Z. Burns recently saying the movie was tipping its hat to Roman Polanski's "Repulsion" and Vladimir Nabakov's "Lolita," an intriguing mix of inspirations. Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vinessa Shaw round out the cast for what we hope is an early year highlight.
"Side Effects" goes over the counter on February 8, 2013.
