The "Spartacus" series has been a significant success for Starz, even with the tragic loss of lead actor Andy Whitfield to cancer after the first season. Heavy with sex, violence and historical intrigue, the Steven S. DeKnight-created sword-and-sandals saga will come to an end in its upcoming third season "Spartacus: War of the Damned."
Starz has now set a return date for that final season — Friday, January 25, 2013 at 9pm. "War of the Damned" will take place after the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber. Following the Battle of Vesuvius, Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) and his men have amassed victories against the Romans that have made the man a legend and increased the ranks of the slave rebellion. Manu Bennett, Dustin Clare, Dan Feuerriegel, Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Ellen Hollman will be back for this final season, with Todd Lasance (Gaius Julius Caesar), Simon Merrells and Anna Hutchison joining the cast.
In the video below, the series' cast and creators set up the new season while showcasing much of its treasured "300"-style speed ramping bloodiness. Starz is also the home of 1950s Miami show "Magic City" and the not-yet-renewed Kelsey Grammer political drama "Boss." The network recently unveiled a trailer for the flashy David S. Goyer historical fantasy "Da Vinci's Demons," which seems like its big bet to take the place of "Spartacus."
