Universal Pictures Sets ‘The Best Man’ Sequel For November 2013 Release

Universal Pictures Sets 'The Best Man' Sequel For November 2013 Release

It was almost exactly 1 year ago when director Malcolm D. Lee revealed that the long-awaited sequel to The Best Man (The Best Man 2 – or whatever it'll eventually be called) had been officially greenlit by Universal.

We haven't heard much since that announcement, and I'd, in fact, forgotten about it… until today, thanks to an email announcement from Universal Pictures, in which the studio sets the release date for the thus far untitled sequel to The Best Man, for Friday, November 15, 2013.

It doesn't give a synopsis, other than to say that Malcolm D. Lee will obviously return to write and direct, as well as produce, with Sean Daniel (The Mummy series) co-producing with Lee.

For years, a sequel to the film that starred Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Terrance Howard, and Morris Chestnut as a group of old friends that reunite for a wedding, has been on the minds and mouths of fans of that first film.

A reunion dinner with several members of the original cast, and Lee, only fueled rumors of a potential sequel.

Now it's a reality.

Nothing on casting yet either, but word is that the sequel will reprise the original cast, which also included Sanaa Lathan, Monica Calhoun, Melissa De Sousa and Harold Perrineau.

I can't say that I'm all-that interested in The Best Man 2 (I'll always prefer fresh stories, instead of recycling, revisiting or extending old ones). However, I'm definitely curious to find out what story (or stories) Lee will tell the second time around.

When we find out, so will you.

But it's officially dated for a November 15, 2013 release – about a year from now – so it's only a matter of time before news on casting and plot are revealed.

Meanwhile, Lee is busy directing Scary Movie 5 for Dimension Films.

YESSSSSSS! A sequel I preferred to see. The Best Man is one of my favorite movies. It's gonna be good to see the old cast together again. I hope Malcolm D. Lee direct the sequel and his cousin Spike Lee, who produced the original movie, come back and produce the best man 2 as well. I can't wait to see what the plot is gonna be.

The Best Man 2 and Waiting to Exhale 2 are two sequels I am interested to see.

OOOOOOHHHHH YEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!

Can't wait to see this! I'm curious to know what the plot will be this time around.

Hey everyone. I'm searching for really smart female screenwriter to collaborate with on projects. If interested hit me up at info@pureegofilmsdotcom

I don't think Malcolm would even do it if there wasn't a new frontier to tread. The possibilities are endless for this sequel. I am excited to see it because The Best Man is a classic! I don't think Malcolm would even do it if it was not done right. He has too much respect for the integrity of the first to just grab a check. In the wake of Think Like A Man, the studio realizes that it would make its money back opening weekend. Tambay I feel you, fresher original stories would be great and I think we are inching closer to that but in the meantime I'm hyped!

I ain't gon' even lie–I'mma be there. Besides, somebody's got to stay on top of and compete with Steve Harvey and his inevitable "Think Like A Man" franchise… *SIGH*

Edwina

I agree with you, preferring something fresh and new. But haven't you ever wondered what happened with Lance and Mia after the wedding and how he coped with the knowledge of his bride and his best friend?

misha

I hear ya, Tambay….I'd love to see fresher, more original stories BUT The Best Man is one of those rare films that left me WANTING a sequel. It remains my all-time favorite romantic film and I'm confident that Lee and cast will deliver once again, though I doubt it will top the original…but sequels rarely do, eh?

I'll go see if Baby Wipes and T Diggs are not in the movie otherwise my dollars will stay in my pocket. DL should have added "and they carry a grudge". Never forgets.

ALM

Thank you Jesus!!!!

THERE'S A SERIOUS LACK OF ORIGINALITY IN BLACK CINEMA!!!!!

starry118

I don't mind the continuation of a good story, when done right, and I think Malcolm Lee and the original cast will do just that. November 2013? I'll be in there like swimwear.

mantan

i'll take it! lol

Jug

DEFINITELY one of my favorite romantic comedies ever. But if it's a cynical money grab I'm done. Story. Story. Story!

Alleycat

Oh goodness. Yes!!!! I loved that cast and movie soooo much. I cannot wait to see this. I am so excited for all the shows and movies that are coming out next year for black folks. Happy dancing over here.

Stacey Muhammad

Yes indeed! looking forward to this!

Soooooo this (along with Set it Off, Love Jones) is my favorite MOVIE(s) so naturally I'd like it to be left alone, but I like Malcom Lee movies so I'm not mad. I'm going to see it no matter what. Best Man came out when I was a freshman in college and those characters, to me, were who I wanted to be when I "grew up" and now that I'm even older I'd like to see where things are now…Yes I wish "we" could do something original but I'm not mad at this, at all.
