Watch Luisa's Story On Predatory Phone Rates ('Middle Of Nowhere' Social Justice Campaign)

Some back-story… in September, Ava DuVernay's Middle Of Nowhere was shown as testimony at the FCC, as a part of the Wright Petition to end predatory phone rates for incarcerated families; the practice of charging unreasonably high rates of up to $2.99 per minute, to accept calls from loved ones behind bars.

The Wright to Call Home campaign centers on urging the FCC to pass the Wright petition and make prison phone calls affordable for all families.

In support of that initiative, here's a short doc directed by Justin Simien (writer/director of Dear White People), on behalf of Participant and AFFRM's Middle Of Nowhere social justice campaign to end predatory phone rates for incarcerated families.

Luisa's 14-year-old son was sentenced as an adult and sent to prison. Since then she has sent countless letters to him but can rarely hear his voice due to the predatory phone rates charged in the United States prison system. Listen to her story and participate in the Wright to Call Home campaign.

And as a reminder, Middle Of Nowhere continues it's theatrical run in NYC, LA, Philly, Newark and opens on new screens in Irvine (CASan FranciscoNew Orleans, and Bryn Mawr (PA) this weekend. Visit AFFRM's Middle Of Nowhere page HERE for the full release schedule.

ALM

I have a family member going through this right now. They received a crazy phone bill the other day. Made me think about MON and the FCC hearing.

Good for Justin! I think he's going to be a great little director when he makes Dear White People. What is the progress on that anyways?

BANTA

I love the campaign they're doing. Been in the position of taking a call then being stung by a crazy bill once or twice. Not fun.
