If the newly-released clip below is any indication, it's unlikely that director Peter Chan's "Dragon" (Wu Xia) will bore audiences with lengthy scenes of overdrawn dialogue. Nothing more complex than a grunt escapes the characters' lips in this stylized fight scene, which boasts an impressive array of weaponry, plus some speed bag-style punching and a healthy dose of property destruction.
In a plot that closely mirrors David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence," Donnie Yen ("Iron Monkey," "Blade II") stars as Liu Jin-Xi, a Chinese villager forced to reveal his martial arts abilities when confronted by roving thugs. Like Viggo Mortensen's Tom Stall, Liu hides a criminal past beneath the veneer of his pastoral life, which threatens to peel away when a detective comes calling in the wake of Liu's clash with the gangsters.
"Dragon" is currently available on VOD and opens in limited theatrical release November 30.
