Academy Announces 7 Makeup and Hairstyling Finalists; 'Cloud Atlas,' 'Holy Motors' Snubbed

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in competition in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the 85th Academy Awards.

The most notable films not included were “Cloud Atlas,” “The Impossible,” “Dark Shadows” and “Holy Motors,” which many had been predicting had decent shots at nominations.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

     “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
     “Les Misérables”
     “Men in Black 3”
     “Snow White and the Huntsman”

On Saturday, January 5, all members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

can we please stop using the word snubbed at indiewire? snubbed carries such a malicious connotation; i highly doubt anyone disdainfully decided to purposefully overlook someone. in fact, there is the possibility that the nominating committee just didn't consider either of those two movies worthy enough. in general i hope we can stop using the word snubbed in relation to end of the year reviews and award nominations- michael fassbender wasn't snubbed last year because people don't respect his acting abilities, there are just an abundance of possibilities with so many different films being produced all over the world that not everyone can be honored with a nomination. let's just say passed over or something of the like. snubbed makes it sound like these nomiating committees are out to do injustices.

Considering what a botch was done on Hopkins' make-up for HITCHCOCK, the omission of HOLY MOTORS is even more egregious. HOLY MOTORS should not only be one of the three nominees, it should WIN that category. (LINCOLN, poles apart, was impressive for it's high quality control working with a massive cast.)

No Holy Motors or Cloud Atlas for Best Makeup? BOOO!!!!!!!!!
