Bret Easton Ellis Throws a Misogynistic Hissy Fit Because ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Director Kathryn Bigelow is a Woman

Bret Easton Ellis Throws a Misogynistic Hissy Fit Because 'Zero Dark Thirty' Director Kathryn Bigelow is a Woman

It’s almost not worth mentioning, because sexism from a misogynist really doesn’t deserve any attention– but Bret Easton Ellis attempting to degrade Kathryn Bigelow and her latest directorial effort–which happens to be kicking ass on the awards circuit–is an embarassment (for him) and a rather blatant indication that the conversation around the industry’s gender inequality is far from over. The “American Psycho” writer took to Twitter to declare that,  “Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she’s a very hot woman she’s really overrated.” He goes on to say that her films are not “visionary filmmaking,” but rather “just OK junk.” Just a reminder–Ellis’ latest film, “The Canyons,” stars Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, which he and director Paul Schrader raised funds for on Kickstarter.

Yes, this is the same man who said that “There’s something about the medium of film itself that I think requires the male gaze. We’re watching, and we’re aroused by looking, whereas I don’t think women respond that way to films, just because of how they’re built.”

As Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams puts it, “Bigelow’s likely too busy picking up prizes in a fisherman’s giant net these days to give a crap what the likes of Ellis thinks of her. But his gross attitude, that a woman’s value as an artist is contingent upon her allure, is despairingly pervasive. And it’s a notion that’s worth precisely less than zero.”

So why call attention to this? Because it’s going to be that much more satisfying when Bigelow doesn’t bother responding to this twit’s tweet–and gets another handful of Oscar nominations and wins on February 24 for “Zero Dark Thirty.”

You're blowing his statements way out of proportion. Are you not a reporter? Are you not supposed to have at least SOME unbiased journalistic integrity.

He's being politically incorrect but not necessarily untrue. I would think women would agree with his comment about the male gaze since that is normally a subject that so interests them (when it's a woman talking about it). A hack is a hack, man or woman.

Says the guy who's best movie was directed by a woman.

Everyone move away, there's nothing to see here, just another desperate ego in search of an audience, everyone move along please, let us do our work and dispose of the corpse.

What is Ellis' problem? I loved "American Psycho" and others but now that he's being so candid about his hatred of women it makes me wonder about all the violence against women in his writing.
I didn't know about Bigelow before Hurt Locker. the trailer looked good and it ended up being an awesome movie. I am excited about ZD30 because i expect the same quality of film-making, not because Bigelow is hot. Ellis is a moron and needs to step away from the twitter.

Let's hope that when Bigelow hears this rant she doesn't blush, twirl her hair and say, "OMG, he thinks I'm hot?!"

well said, ms. savage. however i think you mean "misogynist" rather than "masochist."

Please, stop giving Ellis the publicity he desperately craves.

I didn't think The Hurt Locker was very good. Pretty mediocre if you ask me. I wondered pretty much the same thing after I saw it.

As a fan of EXPENDABLES 2, I'd love to see Bigelow direct EXPENDABLES 3.
