I had the pleasure in the last days to meet and learn about an important new Canadian initiative to find, develop, fund, produce, exhibit new feature films. We connected at the great Whistler Film Festival and CineCoup was finishing a road tour of several weeks to announce their plans for this new company.
The CEO and brains behind this new company is internet veteran J Joly.
We spoke at length about their plans. I urge any Canadians out there with new feature film projects of any kind to check them out.
Top project to receive up to $1MM in financing and a guaranteed run in select Cineplex theatres
Canadian filmmakers now have a new way to develop, market and finance their feature films. The CineCoup Film Accelerator gives filmmakers the opportunity and tools to package their projects and build audiences on its social web platform. Ultimately, CineCoup will option ten projects for development and select one for up to $1 million (CDN) in production financing. The pilot cycle is scheduled to see its first feature film accelerate to the Cineplex big screen within the next year.
“I realized there’s a big disconnect between how the traditional film industry currently operates and how this social generation creates, consumes and supports media,” says Vancouver-based founder J. Joly. “CineCoup bridges that gap by re-imagining the packaging, financing and marketing of original feature films made by – and for – this generation.”
The action starts December 7 when filmmaking teams apply to CineCoup with a two-minute trailer (application closes February 21). Beginning mid-February 2013, the platform opens to the public and film fans join to play a key role in helping CineCoup discover the strongest talent and ideas. For ten weeks, filmmakers participate in weekly challenges that package and promote their projects while fans provide feedback and support to help them advance to the finalist phase.
“We’re pleased to be part of this innovative model,” says Michael Kennedy, Executive Vice President, Filmed Entertainment, Cineplex Entertainment. “We like the idea of using social platforms as way of discovering content that connects with Canadian film goers and ultimately drives audiences to theatres.”
Canada’s largest motion picture exhibitor, Cineplex Entertainment, announced its participation with CineCoup at the Banff World Media Festival in June offering in-theatre marketing support and a guaranteed run in select Cineplex theatres for the top project selected.
During the six-week finalist phase, the Top 10 projects run crowdfunding campaigns and prepare their presentations for the final jury panel. Fans continue to rally around their favourite projects and one CineCoup “Superfan” will earn an advisory seat on the selection jury.
