FX Takes Rights to 'Homeland' Team's Next Drama Series, 'Tyrant'

FX has scooped up the rights and ordered a pilot for “Tyrant,” the next project from “Homeland” executive producing team Gideon Raff and Howard Gordon. Like “Homeland,” “Tyrant” has Middle Eastern themes, centering on an American family accidentally caught up in the political turbulence of the region.

Given the critical and ratings success of “Homeland,” for which Showtime has wisely already ordered a third season, the battle for “Tyrant” was fraught with competition, with HBO and Showtime also vying for rights.

Production at FX is set to begin in the spring. Raff, whose Israeli series “Prisoners of War” was the source material for “Homeland,” is set to pen the pilot.

In September, “Homeland” won Emmys for Best Actress (Claire Danes), Best Actor (Damian Lewis) and Best Series, all in the Dramatic category. Danes also won a Golden Globe for her role as bright but clinically unstable CIA officer Carrie Matthison.
