If you reside in Los Angeles you know that Cinefamily is a cinephile's dream. For the second year, the non-profit theater — which is devoted to "finding and presenting interesting and unusual programs of exceptional, distinctive, weird and wonderful films"– is holding its Fantastic Elastic 24-Hour Holiday Telethon from December 15-16. In addition to raising funds, Cinefamily is celebrating five years of programming. You will be able to watch the event live or attend in person at the Silent Movie Theater, where attendance is free (first come first serve) but seats can be reserved for Kickstarter backers. In other words, if you want to sit on one of the theater's couches up front, it'll cost you a $1,000 donation.
The theater needs to be restored and brought into the modern age with digital projection (don't worry, theater reps insist they will "never stop showing [film] until the day we die even if we are projecting it bicycle-powered after the apocalypse. But meanwhile — through no desire of our own we are completely screwed if we can't project DCP as well.")
The guests presenting at the telethon include Robert Downey Jr., John Hawkes, Nick Offerman, Jason Schwartzman and Peter Bogdanovich. More guests and programs are still to be announced. You can donate, check out the Facebook and Twitter pages, and watch their Kickstarter video below. On their Kickstarter page Cinefamily lay out their restoration plan and the event's program.
Watch the video. It's an enthusiastic call to arms for one of LA's true treasures, a cinema that wants to continue with its "decent nutritiuous culture."
