‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Makes AFI’s Top 10 Of The Year, But No Sign Of ‘The Master’

'The Dark Knight Rises' Makes AFI's Top 10 Of The Year, But No Sign Of 'The Master'

More rankings! As Oscar prognosticators puzzle, fret and worry over each top ten list that drops, a few patterns are becoming clear — firstly, everyone loves "Zero Dark Thirty." And secondly, it looks like outside of a couple of categories, Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" won't be making much of a mark on the Oscar race. And indeed, the AFI shut it out entirely.

The American Film Institute announced their selections today for the best of 2012 in television and film and before the complaints start, "Amour" and "Skyfall" weren't eligible because duh, they are not American productions (though we wonder how the U.K. backed "Les Miserables" made it on here). Anyway, among the big titles they are hardly any surprises, though the lack of any indie-distributed films (outside the indie majors) is a bit of drag. As for the TV list, it's pretty much all of your favorite shows. So yeah, nothing really groundbreaking here at all.

AFI will honor the creatives with some lunch on January 11, 2013. Let us know your thoughts on this below.

The Master is just not for everyone.

Jeff

Really? The Dark Knight Rises gets in but the Avengers doesn't? Ridiculous. And where's Sons of Anarchy in the TV list? If Breaking Bad and Walking Dead are in, then Sons deserves to be as well; it's at least as good as those shows.

AmAR

The Dark Knight Rises is a winner in the sense it is most attention grabber movie of the year. Love it or hate it but you can't ignore it.

Al

For me, it is about only one film this year – TDKR

We all already know AFI is a joke, though, right?

I love how they specifically single out "The Master" for it's lack of awards. I mean it obviously isn't Anderson's best film, so what's with all of the expectations? Is it really a necessity to blatantly point out it's shortcomings, just to make your ego's that much bigger, pathetic.

Reilly

Killing Them Softly is a far superior film than Dark Knight. Can't wait for critics to stop blowing smoke up Nolan's ass.

Art is subjective, competitions are senesless.

Lou

No real disagreements with the top 10 movies, but that TV list is shit.

JD

I would agree with The Master not bring included. Am a fan of PTAs movies but apart from 2 very good scenes, it was an incredibly boring film. I'm also surprise that the dark knight rises is included because that was an overlong, badly written film with a terrible ending

The Master is one of the worst films made in years. It will singlehandedly wreck PTAs carrer. Smart people don't like it.

RODIE

Makes sense. The Master is a misfire that fails to reach it's own potential. Some great performances, cinematography and a couple cool ideas, but it doesn't add up to anything all that interesting or entertaining, unfortunately.

I love that Zero Dark Thirty is 100% rating and widely releases on the day of this creative luncheon.
