Watch: Soaring Trailer For Terrence Malick's 'To The Wonder' With Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko & Javier Bardem

If you weren’t one of those who saw the film in Venice or Toronto this year, you’ve likely seen very little of Terrence Malick‘s “To The Wonder,” the director’s uncharacteristically fast-in-arriving follow-up to his wildly acclaimed “The Tree Of Life.” Two images from the film have been released, but those who’ve been avoiding the reviews might not yet have much of an idea of what to expect.

But that’s just about to change, as The Guardian have the first UK trailer for the film, and it’s a doozy. Packed full of Malick’s sweeping, restless Emmanuel Lubezki-aided imagery, set to an excellently chosen piece of music that we can’t quite identify (it’s not, as far as we can remember, from the film, so let us know if you know what it is), it does a pretty good job of selling the film — which revolves around a love triangle between Ben Affleck‘s Malick surrogate, his French girlfriend, Olga Kurylenko, and his childhood sweetheart, Rachel McAdams, with Javier Bardem also featuring as a faith-stricken priest — without being dishonest about what the film is .

“To The Wonder” got a notably more hostile reception on the festival circuit than many of Malick’s films, but we personally loved it; as you can tell from our Venice review, we’d go to bat for the picture against “The Tree Of Life,” even. But you’ll be able to get a hint of what to expect from the trailer below, and find out for yourself when the film opens in the UK on February 22nd, and in the U.S. on April 12th. Watch the trailer below.

There would appear to be an inordinate amount of running through fields and aimless milling about in this movie.

Pretty pictures are nice. But they are nicer when they are attached to a story you find compelling.

This looks like a movie that is one long Terrence Malick trailer

Seems like a crime to take the work of the directing & cinematography team who're working head-and-shoulders above everyone else in the world & show it off to the world at large for the first time using such a crappy quality video. Honestly, it isn't 2000 anymore, officially released video should not be that low grade.

Looks exactly like TOF in terms of camera movement and some visual imagery. Other than that it looks like a super boring romantic spirituality movie about marrying the right girl….

Can't wait to see it… ?

Looks like only a film Malick could have made……beautiful

Needs more shots of leaves

So….wow. this looks beautiful. Looking forward to it!

I'm thankful for Malick's cinema, pure and simple.

I'm completely overwhelmed by the imagery. Not a huge fan of those low shots that make each actor look like a giant with a huge forehead, though. They were quite unlike anything I'd seen before in ToL, but now they kind of look silly.

Lubezki and Malick are operating on a different level.

Very Tree of Life-esque indeed, only the kids are now grown ups I guess. Looks wonderful as usual (Malick).

Oogle monster

As someone who will defend The Tree of Life till the day I die, this trailer looks AWFUL. And like a cheap knock-off of TOL. Maybe it's b/c choosing Bardem as the voiceover is strange and not at all as effective as having Chastain as the mouth piece or… I don't know, Affleck has never been a great actor and Pitt knocked it out of the park in TOL. Also, it just looks like Affleck is having first world problems and can't pick b/w two beautiful women who by the way happen to twirl and cry a lot.

I really hate trailers that quote critics, I think we should ban that.

Bardem sounds like he's having trouble speaking english. I get why people were laughing now

we don't deserve you Malick!

Well, it's a bit underwhelming. Some scenes feel too similar to The Tree of Life. But I never liked the trailers of his movies but love all of his movies. Hopefully, the full movie wouldn't disappoint.

i hope you like my new moooooooovie,

Fuck my eyes this looks MARVELOUS, but I'm really not ready to accept Ben Affleck into my "take him serious as serious actor" rolodex. I don't care how many stone-faced Argo and The Town performances he gives
