Derek Luke Will Play Civil Rights Activist-Turned-KGB Asset In FX's 'The Americans'

Derek Luke has been tapped for a recurring role in FX’s 1980s-set Soviet-era drama, The Americans, which stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as KGB spies posing as Americans.

Luke will play a character named Gregory, who, as the title of this post notes, is a Civil Rights activist-turned-KGB asset, with a romantic past involving the character played by Russell – a past romance that complicates his work as a trusted operative, as THR reports.

Apparently, there’s lots of buzz around this new FX Cold War drama.

I’m intrigued, even though I haven’t seen a single frame of this. I recall reading that the KGB was tried to influence the Civil Rights movement in the 60s, by placing Communist party members in Martin Luther King Jr.’s entourage; but when it became clear King was more interested in fulfillment of his American dream, and not necessarily a fight against U.S. imperialism, the KGB tried to discredit MLK and replace him with someone more radical and malleable.

This helped fuel all sorts of conspiracy theories, especially about MLK’s death.

The Americans debuts on January 30. I’ll be checking it out.

Luke will next be seen on the big screen in David E. Talbert’s rom-com, Baggage Claim.
