Jimmy Olsen is now Jenny Olsen in Zach Snyder's Man of Steel?

While it’s still unconfirmed, earlier this week, io9 reported that Zach Snyder made a huge change in his upcoming stab at the Superman franchise, Man of Steel.

Reportedly (and according to the occasionally trustworthy IMDB), Snyder has swapped the gender of Clark Kent pal and co-worker, Jimmy Olsen, to Jenny Olsen, played by Rebecca Butler. In Superman mythology, Olsen plays a pretty big role in Superman’s life as a devoted friend and is the owner of a special watch that can signal the man of steel from anywhere in the world.  It is also unknown how large a role Olsen will take in Snyder’s iteration.

The folks at io9, have found Olsen briefly in the trailer at the 1:53 mark. The film stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and the always great Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

If this is the case, it’s a bold and exciting move on Snyder’s part to change up the conventions of the comic book film.  We’ll be interested to see how that pans out and how it is accepted by comic book fandom.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen could look a LOT different in Man of Steel (io9)

This is a case of a character being changed from male to female that actually seems to make no sense to me & actually could hurt IMO. The Superman mythos has no shortage of strong, capable women for a writer to choose–Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lucy Lane & others. These are strong, capable professional women. On the other hand, Superman/Clark has very few supportive male friends and Jimmy plays an important, a vital, role as his closest male friend, confidante & buddy. Its an unnecessary change, seems to be more to generate shock & fan bitching, but I guess we'll have to see how the character plays out in the movie–assuming she lives because as the other commenter said Snyder is generally not kind to female characters. (I actually thing a more provocative choice would have been to keep Jimmy as Jimmy and have him be gay or bisexual).

I'd feel better if the director was ANYONE by Zac Snyder. His movies are not kind to his female characters. I find myself trying to guess how he's going to mistreat Jenny Olsen so I'm not unprepared.
