Netflix is baring its original-content teeth with this new trailer for “House of Cards”; it’s taut first trailer is also below. The series is directed (in part) and executive produced by David Fincher, and stars Kevin Spacey as a ruthless congressman out for blood in the Washington D.C. shark tank. Robin Wright, Kate Mara and Corey Stoll also star.
Fincher directed the first two episodes of the 13-episode series, and it shows — from the golden-grey color palette to the immaculate green screens to the choice of actors (Spacey and Wright have worked with Fincher before, on “Seven” and “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” respectively; Mara is connected via sister Rooney, a.k.a. Lisbeth Salander).
The show is written by Beau Willimon (“The Ides of March,”) and based on the hit BBC series of the same title. With Fincher on board, it’s been a high-priced (and much bally-hooed) gamble from the get-go, to the tune of a $100 million production budget. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has put his faith in it, already ordering a second season. At the premiere of “Inventing David Geffen,” Sarandos was crowing about how well it turned out. “But will it make money?” He looked at me as if to say, “What does that matter?” Clearly, that’s not the issue for Netflix. They’re planting their flag in the content business.
Season one premieres February 1, 2013.
