2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Costume Design

2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Costume Design

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced.

Here’s our take on best costume design, which looks like the only award that is “Anna Karenina”‘s to lose. But a posthumous win for Eiko Ishioka and her work on “Mirror Mirror” is possible, as is throwing a bone to “Les Miserables,” which is unlikely to win too many other awards (save Anne Hathaway).

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here, and this list of all the Oscar-nominated films available ON DEMAND right now.

The nominees:
“Anna Karenina” Jacqueline Durran
“Les Misérables” Paco Delgado
“Lincoln” Joanna Johnston
“Mirror Mirror” Eiko Ishioka
“Snow White and the Huntsman” Colleen Atwood

Will win: “Anna Karenina”
Could win: “Les Miserables”
Should win: “Anna Karenina”

How I think it should have been:

1. Jacqueline Durran, "Anna Karenina"*(WINNER)
2. Kym Barrett & Pierre Yves-Gayraud, "Cloud Atlas"
3. Bob Buck, Ann Maskrey & Richard Taylor, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
4. Paco Delgado, "Les Miserables"*(Runner-up)
5. Joanna Johnston, "Lincoln"

Is the Hunger Games even nominated for anything? Such a shame…

Anna Karenina, A Royal Affair, Snow White and the Huntsman, Django Unchained, and Lincoln are the best in the list…even though Anna is marvelous but the winner would be Snow White and who would contest to the clothes of the evil queen!

Cloud Atlas deserves a nomination. It would be very unfair if it doesn't get it. Come on!

the spanish movie 'Blancanieves' has stunning costumes as well – Paco Delgado which will be def nominated for LesMis – should also be complimented for this effort as well

Danny Glicker designed on the road. His name's not Glocker. Also Kasia Walicka-Maimone not "Malmone" Those are the only two people on the list that I know personally, you may want to check your spelling on the others…

Please listen to Roger Ebert and suggest Cloud Atlas for this award. Every major actor played 6 roles. Halle Berry played a white woman in the 1930s…A man… A reporter in the 70s and even a native.

I'm surprised Hunger Games isn't mentioned. And I will agree with Ebert that Cloud Atlas will get a nomination.

The hobbit will definately win. What does this website have against The Hobbit getting any nominations, which no doubt it will deserve. It looks like this site is just putting the same five movies in slightly different orders for all the categories.

What about The Avengers?

Bel Ami is nomination worthy

The Hobbit is the only movie that designed costumes that look real/good. Any doubts, go watch both trailers for the movie. Any more doubts, go watch The Lord of the Rings.

I don't think we should forget about The Hunger Games. I mean, it's always been said, without a doubt, that most Costume Design Oscars go to the movies with the outright gestures of near-insane grandiose, well, costumes. And who's to say that despite the fact the costumes in The Hunger Games weren't widespread, but the sheer quantity and outrageousness of them isn't to be outdone. I think the fact it's not on anyone's mind for a first prediction is crazy.
