2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Documentary Short

2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Documentary Short

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced.

Oddly the only one of the three short categories NOT open to voting by the entire Academy membership, the documentary short Oscar race is between 5 generally dire films — topics include homelessness, aging and cancer. The standouts to me were Sean Fine and Andrea Nix's "Inocente" and Cynthia Wade and Robin Honan's "Mondays at Racine" (the former about a homeless immigrant, the latter about women with cancer who meet a beauty salon in Long Island). Whether that means either could win is tricky (this category is wildly unpredictable), but I'll wager its between the two, with the extraordinarily emotional "Mondays" having the edge.

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here, and this list of all the Oscar-nominated films available ON DEMAND right now.

The nominees:
"Inocente"
"King's Point"
"Mondays at Racine"
"Open Heart"
"Redemption"

Will win: "Mondays at Racine"
Could win: "Inocente"
Should win: "Mondays at Racine"

ELDERT HOEBEE

I have just listened to ABC891AM in Adelaide and apologise for Ian Hentschke's incorrect pronunciation of your Christian name Joost. To turn you into "joast" like in "toast" is diabolical. I hope you didn't sanction the bastradisation of your Dutrch heritage and corrected Ian at the end of the interview.
