Are we already looking at one of next year’s Best Actress nominees? With three Oscar nominations and one win under her belt, Nicole Kidman is no stranger to the awards season, and while The Weinstein Company is hoping to see some love for “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Django Unchained” at the Dolby Theater tonight, they’ve already got their eyes on next year. In recent days they snapped up the rights to the Idris Elba-starring biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” and now they’ve got another true-life tale added to their slate.
Harvey’s company is picking up the rights to “Grace of Monaco,” the film directed by “La Vie En Rose” helmer Olivier Dahan, featuring Kidman playing none other than screen icon and royal, Grace Kelly. Set in 1962, when the city-state/tax haven of Monaco got into a heated dispute with France, Charles De Gaulle gave Kelly’s husband Prince Rainer III six months to change his tax laws. The actress/royalty maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup. Tim Roth, Paz Vega, Parker Posey, Frank Langella and Milo Ventimiglia co-star and the Weinsteins are banking big on this one, paying a reported $4 million for the rights with a P&A commitment worth $10 million. Damn.
You can take a look at Kidman as Kelly in the first official images above and below. And with “Grace of Monaco” joining ‘Mandela’ and “August: Osage County,” with an ensemble led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, on Harvey’s forthcoming roster, you can bet he’ll be back once again at the Dolby Theater in 2014 in full force.
