First Trailer For 'The North Star' (Jeremiah Trotter As Escaped Slave, Keith David As Frederick Douglass)

If you missed my January 9 post on upcoming slave-themed films that are scheduled to be released in the next 12 to 18 months, click HERE to catch up.

This was one of the films I mentioned on that list.

Recapping… Former NFL linebacker Jeremiah Trotter stars as escaped slave Big Ben Jones, alongside Keith David as Frederick Douglass, in writer/director Thomas K. Phillips’ upcoming indie feature film, The North Star, which we first alerted you to last summer, and have been following since then.

The film is based on true events, and tells the story of the aforementioned Big Ben Jones, a slave who makes a daring escape from a Virginia plantation to Buckingham, PA in 1848, and gets helped by local Quakers

In addition to Trotter and David, the film’s cast includes Clifton PowellMichael RapaportLynn WhitfieldMichael Jai WhiteApril WoodallJermaine Jones, and Alana Lee

By the way, as I discovered when I first researched the project last year, in real life, The North Star was the name of an anti-slavery newspaper published by Frederick Douglass in the 1800s.

A first trailer for the film has surfaced and it’s embedded below; no word yet on an exact release date.

I think what Urbanauteur and to a lesser extent Carrey are trying to say is the cinematography leaves much to be desired and the story is old hat…just being real here..but the Action parts look awesome and professionally done and the costuming looks great and to Darkans point,if it was done for 60 thousand and its a documentary then Id say its pretty good, but not as a feature film..but it might be PBS worthy.

Roshca I.agree gr8 cinematography

Haters are a.dime a dozen

I think its beautifully shot! To the bad commets, please post your work;-)

lol@Urbanauteur thats funny,we should have Obama sign an executive order for whomever this director is to stop making movies, I dont think two of the stars mentioned in this article Michael Jai White and Michael Rappaport are even in the movie..not according to IMDB..

Dame..! that was terrible!..give me $100,000, 6 "flash cameras", 3 sennheiser mics, recast and its on like chicken bone;-)

Wow…. Slavery movies have gotten old quick. Who's funding this stuff? SMDH.

Jimmy crack corn and I don't care. One day me massda rode aroun' de farm, de flies so numerous dey did swarm. One chanced to bite 'im on the thigh, de debble be dat blue tail fly. Yep the horse bucks and the master is killed, okay. The slave then escapes.

I guess I'm saying I am about tired of hearing "nigga-nigga-nigga" even if the bad guys gets their nuts blown off by the good guys. I'm serious… and when this clip opened with the corniest black actor of them all, Keith David as Frederick Douglass, I was instantly dead done.

I mean, is it me or did anyone else smell Lifetime's Betty & Coretta, Fred Williamson's Boss and Tyler's The Family That Preys Together (on lifetime today)?

Damn, I know I've said bring on all the slave movies but strike that from my record. I am tired tired tired of all resemblances of Nigger Jim and the rest of the field slaves running for their freedom. I mean, hell, is this suppose to be educational or pure joyous entertainment?

If it's for educational purposes, I've read that book in first grade. If it's entertainment, I am entertained out… by tobacco chewing rednecks chasing down black folks and yelling "nigger-nigger-nigger, come back here you goddamn nigger."
