'Law & Order SVU' Episode w/Mike Tyson Bombs In The Ratings

Well it was supposed to be a sure thing…

Wednesday’s episode of Law & Order SVU guest-starring Mike Tyson, which was, of course, a controversial casting choice from the moment it was announced, was supposed to be a sure ratings grabber. But it turned out instead to be just the opposite.

The episode entitled Monster’s Legacy, in which Tyson played a convicted killer on death row who claims that the sexual abuse he suffered as a child led to his crimes, came in third in its time slot after Modern Family on ABC and Criminal Minds on CBS. The episode attracted 5.2 million veiwers which is the lowest audience ever for an original, regularly scheduled episode in the series’ history.

And to add insult to injury, the show’s ratings were 12% lower than the previous week’s show and Modern Family actually posted its lowset ratings numbers in years and yet still beat out SUV.

No doubt the controversy and the criticisms about the casting of Tyson may have taken a toll on the show’s ratings.

Bridgette Rodriguez

Mike Tyson being cast as a guest star on Law and Order SVU was TERRIBLY insensitive to survivors of rape/SA, sent them a terrible message, and set some survivors/victims backwards in their healing journey, etc. Why? Please go to youtube and look up Bridgette Rodriguez AND Mike Tyson, Law and Order and listen to my personal video. NBC should have cast him somewhere else, like Chicago Fire, Dick Wolf's other show. Shame, shame on SVU! I will never watch it again, and I know others feel the same way. In addition. ratings/# of viewers for the Tyson episode dropped 12% and was lowest rated/viewed episode in SVU's history for a regularly scheduled show. That's no accident…

Geneva Girl

We were surprised how good he was. We had expected him to be terrible, but was not. I thought it was a good episode. It's a shame that Ed Asner wasn't used as much since he's always terrific.

Monique a Williams

It's queued in my Hulu, and I plan on checking it out. I think Mike deserves a shot.

SVU used to be a great show, but their wacky guest casting has been annoying for a while now.
