Nominations For The SAFTA’s (Premiere South African Film & TV Awards) Announced

Nominations For The SAFTA's (Premiere South African Film & TV Awards) Announced

As we here in the USA debate this year’s Academy Award nominess, ahead of the February 24th celebration, South Africa’s annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) – the premier film and television industry awards in the country, under the custodianship of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) – announced its 2013 nominees, in celebration of the excellence in the local film and television industry.

Only South African film and television productions are eligible for the awards.

The official announcement event was held at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg, last night (February 13), and was attended by industry professionals, members of the media and representatives from the National Film and Video Foundation, who organise the awards.

Leading the nominations in the TV category is Sex Tips For Girls, which received 10 nominations (including Best TV drama), and, in the feature film category, the Afrikaans comedy Semi-Soet, which received 8 nominations (including Best Feature Film).

Winners of the 2013 SAFTAs will be announced on March 15 at a star-studded ceremony at Gallagher Estate, Midrand.

There has been some contoversy over the years surrounding the awards ceremony, with criticism of its judging process, calling for more transparency, as well as for having too many categories, which they aren’t always able to get enough nominations for, and have been forced to extend the entry deadline to accomodate further searches for worthwhile material to nominate.

But, if anything, the below list of nominees should introduce you to some new films and TV series that you may not be familiar with, and that you might want to seek out – assuming they’re available wherever you are.

Here is the list of nominees:
