Laika and Focus Features, the partnership behind animation hits "Coraline" and "ParaNorman," announced today they are re-teaming to produce and distribute "The Boxtrolls," a new 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature based on the bestselling fantasy novel "Here Be Monsters."
The movie, which is being released nationwide by Focus on October 17th, 2014, is a comedic fable about a Victorian-era town where foul monsters are rumored to live beneath the cobblestoned streets. According to legend, the Boxtrolls crawl out from the sewers at night to steal the townspeople's most precious children and cheeses. In fact, they are a quirky community of dumpster-diving oddballs who have raised an orphaned human boy as one of their own.
"It's Dickens by way of Monty Python," said Laika president and CEO Travis Knight, calling the film "a visually dazzling mash-up of gripping detective story, absurdist comedy, and steampunk adventure with a surprisingly wholesome heart…'The Boxtrolls' is a moving and human story with timelessness and powerful emotional resonance."
The voice cast for "The Boxtrolls" includes Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade, and Tracey Morgan. Anthony Stacchi ("Open Season") and Graham Annable (story artist on "Coraline" and "ParaNorman") are directing, and David Ichioka and Knight are producing.
