Raimi and Cast Talk 'Oz the Great and Powerful' in EW: Off-Limits Ruby Slippers, Franco Finds His Brain and More

This week’s Entertainment Weekly (on newsstands March 1) goes inside Disney’s reported $200 million yellow brick road prequel “Oz the Great and Powerful.” The mag sits down with director Sam Raimi and stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz to talk all things Oz. Highlights below.

Williams’ loyalty to the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz”:

“I don’t know if I’ve ever met a person who wasn’t a fan of
the original film. Nor would I like to, I don’t think.”

Raimi on the legal precautions involved on set, due to Warner Bros.’ rights of the original film:

“The legal department kept saying, ‘No, that’s too close.
That’s too close.’ And finally we came up with designs that were
not too close, but not too far, either.”

Weisz on not worrying about the off-limits red ruby slippers:

“Gemstone shoes aren’t really my style. I’m more
of a black-leather kind of person.”

Franco on his maturation since Raimi’s “Spider Man” films:

“I was obviously a much younger actor when we did the first
Spider-Man. So maybe I was more immature or shortsighted back then. And I took
myself rather seriously. I had too much of that brooding, self-centered
attitude. But now I try to be a positive force, I try to be less selfish.”

And on finding his brain:

“My earlier self was very much like the Scarecrow. I felt
like I wanted the brain. Then when I went back to school it was a great
experience, but I also saw that half of it was just going through the steps.
That I had the brain all along! I’d say that nowadays, if I saw the Wizard, the lesson that I need to
learn, and that I need  to learn
continually, is how important my loved ones are—family, friends, the people
around me. I have a tendency to overload myself with work, and sometimes that
can get in the way. In other ways, it’s
fine because I work with all of my closest friends. Like Sam.”
