Thomas will star in Northern Soul, a film set in 1974, which tells the tale of two white British friends whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music. They travel to the USA to bring back rare soul records, in the hopes of becoming hit DJs.
Also starring in the film will be British actor and comedian Steve Coogan, along with the two leads Elliot James Langridge and Josh Whitehouse.
Lisa Stansfield will play the mother to Langridge’s character.
Northern Soul is directed by Elaine Constantine, with Debbie Gray producing. Henry Normal served as executive producer, with the UK’s Enterprise Investment Scheme providing funding.
Thomas also will appear in the film adaptation of popular musical Sunshine On Leith, which tells the story of two army veterans returning home from war in Afghanistan; one finds his soul mate, while the other loses the girl he left behind.
The film’s name is taken from the title of Scottish duo The Proclaimers’ second album.
Also starring with Thomas in Sunshine will be Peter Mullan, Jane Horrocks, George McKay, Kevin Guthrie, and Freya Mavor.
The project was co-produced by DNA Films and Black Camel Pictures, and led by director Dexter Fletcher. Stephen Greenhorn, the man behind the musical, also adapted the film’s script.
