Talk about a match made on Mars. Gender-skewering icons David Bowie and Tilda Swinton have yet to pair up for a feature film, but this morning the internet got the next best thing: a music video featuring the two for Bowie's latest single "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)," directed by Floria Sigismondi ("The Runaways").
In the short, the duo play a '50s-styled married couple who are transformed via their encounter with a modern-day celebrity couple.
To many, their coupling might seem inspired, but to followers of Nathaniel Baruch's hilarious Tumblr page "Tilda Stardust," it's been a long time coming. Headlined by the tagline "Dedicated to the belief that Tilda and Bowie are one person," Baruch's blog has long made a solid argument for why that's the case via a slew of eerily mirroring photos of the two superstars.
Naturally, we asked Baruch (who works as a film publicist for Brigade Marketing) what he makes of the video: "To see the idea of the Tilda Stardust tumblr born of late-night fever dreams become a reality in this way — from the mind of the man/woman/android itself — is nothing short of breathtaking, even if it is just a total coincidence," he said. "Floria Sigismondi's video is a grotesque/nightmarish vision of culture gone wrong… and that is beautiful.
"As for whether this means the end of my Tumblr, I'd simply suggest that releasing a music video to 'prove' that Bowie and Tilda are two people has a distinct air of 'The lady doth protest too much, methinks.'"
