It’s only a few days until the Academy Awards and what better way to prepare than refresh our memory — or quiz our cinephile selves — on all the Best Picture winners from star to finish? This Oscar homage video made by video essayist and Indiewire Press Play contributor Nelson Carvajal looks back on 84 years of award winning cinema, reminding us of the many monumental films that lit up our screens since the beginning.
Between the the first silent Oscar winner “Wings” at the 1927/1928 awards to latest with last year’s “The Artist,” the video collages together some of the most memorable shots of films like “It Happened One Night,” “Ben-Hur,” “Rain Man,” “Schindler’s List,” “American Beauty” and more. While many may be films we all own in our collections, the earlier clips are refreshers of the great movies that inspired them. The video ends with shots from each of this year’s nine nominees, leaving us to wonder what the Academy will take next (though all signs point to “Argo”).
If you claim you’re the ultimate film buff, give yourself a little cinema history quiz and see if you can name them all, or just enjoy the four minute reflection of the last 84 years of the moving image.
