AMC has quite the track record with original scripted series — aside from “Rubicon” and the experiment that was “The Prisoner,” the network’s done consistently well with its hourlong dramas: “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” “Hell on Wheels,” even the returning “The Killing.”
So “Low Winter Sun,” the network’s newest show, probably merits attention just on the basis of the channel on which it’ll be broadcast. But the crime series, which comes from writer, executive producer and showrunner Chris Mundy (“Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior”), also stars the excellent Mark Strong (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “Zero Dark Thirty”), who’s reprising his role as troubled Detective Frank Agnew from the original, acclaimed two-part 2006 U.K. miniseries of the same name on which the show is based. Lennie James (“The Walking Dead”) co-stars in the AMC series, which transplants the story of how the murder of a fellow detective pulls Agnew into the criminal underworld from Edinburgh to Detroit.
