Weinstein Company Goes Haute-Couture with 'Yves Saint Laurent' Biopic

The Weinstein Company has taken US distribution rights to French-language biopic “Yves Saint Laurent,” directed by Jalil Lespert (“Headwinds”) and chronicling the rise of the eponymous legendary fashion designer.

The film is co-penned by Lespert and Marrie-Pierre Huster, and stars Pierre Niney (“18 Years Old and Rising”) in the title role, with Guillaume Gallienne (Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antionette”) set to play Saint Laurent’s one-time romantic partner and house co-founder, Pierre Berge.

Here’s a more in-depth synopsis:

In January 1958, Yves Saint Laurent – aged merely 21 – was
unexpectedly called upon to oversee the great Paris fashion house established by
the recently deceased Christian Dior. All eyes turned to this very young
assistant as he presented his first haute couture collection for Dior. During
the highly successful and groundbreaking show, Saint Laurent met Pierre Bergé,
patron of the arts, future love of his life and lifelong business partner.
Three years later, they created the Yves Saint Laurent Company, which became
one of the most famous brands in fashion and luxury. Despite his own doubts and
demons, Saint Laurent, fostered by Bergé, managed to turn the sleepy world of
fashion upside down.

Meanwhile, director Bertrand Bonello is prepping an unrelated film production titled “Yves Saint Laurent,” starring Gaspard Ulliel (“Paris, Je T’aime,” “A Very Long Engagement”) and Dardenne brothers regular Jeremie Renier (“The Kid with the Bike”).

Our look at the Weinsteins’ in-progress 2013 Oscar slate is here.
