Christopher Abbott (AKA Charlie) Abruptly Exits 'Girls' Season 3 As Production Starts

The unstoppable “Girls” may have just closed out its second season with its divisive finale, but it looks like one of the major storyline developments is getting an unexpected shakeup. Not all is sunny on Lena Dunham‘s set of the now-shooting third season, and one major character has abruptly exited the show.

NYPost reveals that Christopher Abbott — who plays Marnie’s perennial doormat Charlie — has left, with reps for the actor confirming he’s “grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire ‘Girls’ cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.” But according to the paper, there may have been more at play.

Their sources say that Dunham and Abbott clashed, with Abbott reportedly dissatisfied with “the direction things are going in.” No matter what the official story is, it’s certainly a surprise given that Charlie’s arc really developed in the latter half of season two, with the character landing a hot new job after selling a successful app, and with Marnie back in his arms with declarations of love. So now the writers will have to do some interesting dancing to write him out of the show, though to be honest, the whole Charlie/Marnie drama was getting a bit tedious and repetitive, so maybe Abbott’s exit is not the worst thing in the world.

We’ll see how this develops, but it looks like season three of “Girls” is already serving up some twists without a single episode having aired.

*dispises* not disposes. Sorry.

I'm not surprised. It's pretty clear on the DVD extras where Lena is chatting with the fellas, that he disposes her.

HBo's game of thrones seasons dvd box set has made a great success, and his another tv Girls season 3 dvd box set has announced.and girls Season 3 DVD Box Set will consist of 12 episodes, two episodes more than either Seasons 1 or 2.
Creator and star Lena Dunham (who also won a Globe for the show, for Best Actress in a Comedy) confirmed the news on Alec Baldwin's Here's the Thing podcast this week, saying that the show would begin work on Season 3 in March.

Looks like he has been up to some really cool things way better than Girls…

Charlie leaving the show is such a bummer! When I first heard the rumor from a few friends in my office at DISH, I was convinced that it wasn’t true. : ( At least I have all the past seasons recorded, so I can always go back and stare at that gorgeous face whenever. I'm just glad that I was able to save all of these episodes without using up too much room on my DVR, since my DISH Hopper has up to 2,000 hours of recording space. Plus, with that much memory room, I'll never have to delete these now precious episodes of Charlie to make room for new recordings.

The show really sucks now. Jessa and Shoshana are the only "fun" parts of it. The finale with the overdone bullshit music and running to Hannah's apartment made my girlfriend and I want to vomit.

Well, at least one person on the set could see what a train wreck this show has devolved into. It is pretty unwatchable at this point.

I loved "Tiny Furniture." No one wanted this to work more than I did. But after staggering out of the gate in season 1 and finally appearing to find its footing with the Season 1 finale, Season 2 has been just awful.

The best thing for Lena Dunham would be to have HBO pull the plug lest the bad smell from this mess stinks up the rest of her career.

I don't like the Marnie & Adam arc either, Girls can be interesting sometimes but somehow I feel that is very shallow & very overrated, and I think Christopher Abbot is a great actor, I loved him in Hello, I must be going, wish him the best luck!

Maybe someone's getting a bit too big for their boots if they're clashing with the creator/writer/director about the 'direction' things are going in? What was this guy doing before Girls? Did anyone even know his name?

I always thought Christopher Abbot was miscast and the Charlie character is underwrought. He was wonderful in his cameo in "Enlightened" though.

Here's hoping he makes those Cassavetes-like projects he was talking about earlier in the year.

Good! The actors are finally refusing to participate in creating junk.

that sucks….
i liked the idea of them keeping the cast the same from season one.

This show jumped the shark so badly this past season. Specifically the Patrick Wilson episode. Utter tripe.

thank god this happened!!!!! I love Charlie, but not Charlie and Marnie together… I think it is the best thing, because now Marnie has to face it the world alone!!!!!

I mean,.. this thing about you have money, now you can take care of me…
You another that could leave Girls? it's Adam!
I don't know… I thought the second season wasn't very good……
