There is probably no bigger (or riskier) question mark this spring than Baz Luhrmann‘s “The Great Gatsby,” which has battled a delay and rumors of a troubled production only to nab the opening slot at the Cannes Film Festival (and in the process breaking an unspoken tradition of the Croisette hosting world premieres only — it will open in the U.S. a week earlier). But there are reasons to be excited. Namely, Luhrmann has faced this kind of scrutiny before and won people over, and also, the always charming Jason Clarke excitedly told us last year that the 3D will “….be amazing and there’s never been anything like it.”
So, is he right? A brand new trailer for the F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation has dropped in all its glory, hoping to turn an English class assignment into a starry spectacle and box office blockbuster. But does it work? Well, we do love the cast, as you know (hard to argue with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and more), but as always, the sticking point has been the marriage of contemporary music to the already specifically defined Jazz Age milieu. The executive producer of the music, none other than Jay-Z, certainly has his work cut out for him — will it come together successfully?
You tell us. Either way, we’ll be putting on the 3D glasses on May 10th.
