A bit of an unlikely opener for this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Tom Berninger’s “Mistaken for Strangers” will premiere on April 17th at the festival, followed by a performance from the band. Below we have a first look at the film, which straddles an interesting line between tour rock doc and sibling rivalry comedy.
Filmmaker Tom is the brother of indie rock band The National’s frontman, Matt Berninger, and the film chronicles his experiences with the band as a roadie, living in his brother’s shadow, and fostering an intense disliking of indie music as a whole. The film looks pretty goofy, which is an interesting counterpoint to the band’s relatively dark music. The title of the film is taken from a single off of the band’s fourth album, “Boxer.”
Check out the trailer below, and you can also catch Matt Berninger at the Tribeca Talks: Music + Film panel alongside Todd Haynes and Q Tip on April 23rd.
