Annie May Not Be Called Annie In Overbrook’s Remake After All… Try Isabella (Details)

Annie May Not Be Called Annie In Overbrook's Remake After All... Try Isabella (Details)

The folks at Playbill got their hands on a union casting notice for the upcoming Annie remake, starring Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx. And, apparently, just as it was announced that Jamie Foxx would play a variation of Daddy Warbucks, a character named Benjamin Stacks, the casting notice reveals that other character’s names will be changed for the remake – notably, the title character!

The synopsis from the casting notice states that the Columbia Pictures film will center around…

… an 11-year-old foster child named Isabella, who dreams of a better life involving a “no-limit credit card and shopping sprees galore,” and an eight-year-old child named Mia, who has a slight speech impediment.

And then they meet a fellow by the name of Benjamin Stacks…

Obviously the film’s producers are taking some creative liberties with the story, and aren’t married to the source material, starting with the character name changes of two key players.

Assuming the above holds, I’d expect the eventual title of the film to be something other than Annie.

Production is now set to begin in August, in New York City, according to a casting notice, so I’ll keep my eyes open.

Will Gluck is directing the project, based on a script he revised, originally written by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna.

Will & Jada Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, in partnership with Jay-Z (who’ll be working on the soundtrack) are producing.

The long-in-development remake of the Broadway musical will be released by Sony Pictures on December 252014.
