John Oliver Will Bravely Test How 'The Daily Show' Works Without Jon Stewart Starting on June 10

Yes, once upon a time — in the ’90s — “The Daily Show” was hosted by Craig Kilborn, but for the past decade plus, the incisive, hilarious fake news show has been defined by and identified with Jon Stewart.

So you have to give John Oliver credit — the show’s Senior British Correspondent will be attempting to fill some very big shoes this summer when he takes over as guest host while Stewart is off shooting his directorial debut “Rosewater,” from a script he adapted from “Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival,” the 2011 memoir by Iranian Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari.

Oliver’s eight-week stint as guest host will begin on Monday, June 10, with Stewart set to return September 3 (the show will also take four weeks off). “Don’t worry, it’s still going to be everything that you love about ‘The Daily Show,’ just without the thing that you love the most about it,” Oliver said in the announcement.

At least he’ll have some good guests — Seth Rogen (June 10), Armando Iannucci (June 11), Mavis Staples (June 12) and Fareed Zakaria (June 13) are set for the first week, with Staples slated for a musical performance. Oliver’s been a part of “The Daily Show” since 2006.

I am sure that Oliver will be a great host, but I am still heartbroken to bid Stewart a temporary goodbye. It's just that watching Stewart on The Daily Show has become as routine to me as brushing my teeth! Gosh, I don't even know the last time I skipped an episode of his witty news show, although I can never seem to make it home from my office at DISH in time to see it. The only way I'm saved from totally missing out is because I can start watching it on my phone during the bus ride home with DISH Anywhere. This app links my mobile devices to my home DVR wirelessly, so it's easy for me to watch all my shows no matter where I am!
