Now You Can See 'The Butler' Sooner Than Expected

The Weinstein Company has announced that they have moved up the release date for their film The Butler, from its original October 18th slot to August 16th.

The argument is that, the mid-August slot has tended to do well for more serious adult films, such as The Help and Eat Pray Love, for audiences who are either burned out by, or desperately looking for something other than those huge, CGI bloated, superhero comic book films, which dominate the summer season.

One thing for sure, it’s going to be one of the most controversial films of the year, judging from the response we got when we posted the trailer for the film HERE; Well, The Butler and that Nina Simone film with Zoe Saldana, and, believe me, we can’t wait to post the trailer for that!

You hit the nail on the head. I don't buy that PR spin for one second. Everyone true film fan knows the summer time is a dead time for films unless you have a blockbuster. I am glad they are trying to bury the film during the summer movie season. Films that come out in the fall have a boatload of exposure and are prime for award season, after the trailer was released and bad reviews came in they swiftly attempted to hide it during the summer.

The trailer makes it look like contemporary black history for white people!

Cassian Elwes who's one of the producers posted this to twitter like an hour ago:

‏"TWC moved #thebutler from October to wide aug 16 because the test scores the other night in Connecticut were ridiculously good"

Maybe he was getting questions about it. So if that's the case then we might be looking at another big hit like The Help was.

i will see the butler.
i wont see the blackface zoe saldana.

I'm sorry but the trailer looked pretty bad. Even the trailer for The Help didn't make me laugh like this one does. It looks like an SNL skit. And is that Forest Whitaker's own hair or is he wearing a wig because it's not convincing.

Is it merely a coincidence that this shift happened soon after the trailer debuted – a trailer that received a lot more jeers than cheers across the blogosphere? I have a funny feeling about this, but we'll see. The Weinstein Company has been able to create magic out of almost about everything they've gotten their hands on, squeezing as much life out of them.

I think it is too early to say it is going to generate any widespread controversy simply because of reactions on this website (which was about split anyway).
