Owen Wilson Joins Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Inherent Vice’ With Joaquin Phoenix & Benicio Del Toro

Owen Wilson Joins Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice' With Joaquin Phoenix & Benicio Del Toro

With “Punch Drunk Love,” Paul Thomas Anderson managed to find the dark, vulnerable core at the center of Adam Sandler‘s schtick and turn it into something memorable, compelling and unique. Can he do the same for Owen Wilson‘s shaggy, goofy, lovable, slacker/surfer vibe?

We’ll find out, as the actor has been cast in “Inherent Vice,” joining the already exciting cast of Joaquin Phoenix and Benicio Del Toro. Based on the book by Thomas Pynchon and set in 1970s Los Angeles, the story follows inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello (Phoenix) as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl, who also happens to be one of his ex-girlfriends. Del Toro will play Sportello’s lawyer/legal counsel, while Wilson’s role is being kept secret for now, but he’s apparently one of the leads. Is it possible he’s playing the other cop who’s always busting Sportello’s balls? It would be against type, but certainly inspired. Update: Cigarettes & Red Vines reveal that Wilson will be playing musician Coy Harlingen.

Speculate below. Production begins later this month. [The Wrap]

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF DANIEL DAY LEWIS played BIG FOOT !

i KIND of want everyone who has ever appeared in a pta movie to be in Inherent Vice

rudeboy

coy faked his own death, in the book and sportello meets his heroin addled wife and toddler daughter. the wife has fake chompers but is not bad looking from what i remember. I like this choice for coy.

interesting roles and there are MANY:
THE AUNT OF DOC –
MIKEY
MICKEYS GIRL AND DOCS EX; roller girl hot
THE DA GIRL FRIEND (a comedian please)
BIG FOOT –
the doctor
the guy who owns headshop lol
cookie and the jade
blah blah
I am so hyped for this

Lulu

Philip Seymour Hoffman has to be in this. Surely.

Cigs And Red Vines reports that he will be playing Coy Harlingen

jim

i thought that guy committed suicide?

DG

This rules. I bet he plays the guy Doc goes to for advice and he gives him acid. I can't remember what his name is but it happens early in the story. Theres also a character who has images of his romantic conquests emblazoned on his ties, could see Wilson being that guy too

Russ

With Joaquin Phoenix & Benicio Del Toro, why do you need any more Name Actors, to me, it ruins the believability of the story, I like discovering new talent in films that I love. I believe their character more when I know they're not a celebrity

davis

the antagonist is a neo nazi. think about it.

jon

I just came all over my keyboard. Typing with sticky fingers.

Amy

He could be playing the Coy Harlingen but I wouldn't call that a "lead". But Owen Wilson as Bigfoot could be kind of genius.

Now waiting for the Charlize confirmation and we have the best cast of 2014 :)
