President George H.W. Bush hosted a screening of the film “Honor Flight” Thursday evening in Kennebunkport, ME. The documentary focuses on four World War II veterans and their journey to the memorial site in Washington, D.C.
“It was wonderful to see a community come together in such an extraordinary way,” the former President and WWII veteran said. “The film’s ability to reach out to fellow veterans, friends, and family is what makes this country great. Barbara joins me in saluting everyone involved in ‘Honor Flight’ and congratulating the makers of this remarkable film for bringing this story to the big screen.”
“Honor Flight” focuses on four World War II veterans attempting to fly to Washington, DC to see the monuments dedicated in their honor. The film’s title comes from the Honor Flight Network, the organization responsible for the men’s journey to our nation’s capital. The program was founded by Retired Air Force Captain Earl Morse, a physician assistant who took note of the financial and physical difficulties facing the aging war heroes who wanted to see their memorial.
The President owns a summer home in the small coastal town in southern Maine. His son, President George W. Bush, dedicated the National World War II Memorial many of the veterans were able to visit thanks to the program. The memorial opened to the public in April 2004, and the inaugural Honor Flight took place in May 2005.
Indiewire’s parent company SnagFilms launched “Honor Our Heroes” earlier this month, a social media campaign in celebration of “Honor Flight” and to recognize service members and veterans.
“‘Honor Flight’ exudes patriotism and is the perfect Memorial Day story to share,” said SnagFilms CEO Rick Allen. “I cannot think of anyone better than President George H.W. Bush, a decorated WWII veteran himself, to host a screening of the film and to help honor our heroes this holiday.”
Part of the “Honor Our Heroes” program allows anyone to send a personalized online telegram saluting veterans for their service and sacrifice. Users can access the custom designed telegrams via the Facebook page or the “Honor Flight” film website.
“Honor Flight” is available on cable VOD and iTunes.
